Wanted to try a grow, so here we go... C99

Thanks for the info. I have one oscillating fan blowing on the plants and one small fan blowing air into the space at floor level from the side to get some fresh air moving too. I don't have a cool hood with an inline fan, just these two. I can keep the tops at 79 degrees with the hood around 10-11" away with the MH bulb. I'm thinking that it will be at least twice that much with the HPS bulb during flower to hold that temperature. I think that I will start running the oscillating fan 24/7 and have the other and the humidifier turn off with the light. Checking this morning, the soil is drying out nicely a couple of inches down, so I'm going to water with some nutes later.

100% true. Air circulation, lighting, temperature and nutrients are the 4 horsemen for growing good bud. Any one of those that are lacking will hinder your grow. For sure.

OK, I topped these 5 days ago. Top dressed with another Tbsp per of lime and watered with some nutes 2 days ago. Ph in was 6.8 and runoff was an average of 5.8 The biggest one is showing preflowers and the runt has taken off. I'm very pleased with the progress so far and appreciate every ones advice up to this point. I am counting days on the calendar and trying to figure when to flip. I am going to run into a problem when it's time to dry and cure if I'm not careful. It looks like I will need to flip around day 35 at the latest or wait until day 50 or so. We'll see how the veg goes over the next 2 weeks. Any advice or criticism would be welcome; this is my first grow that won't turn out male so I could use any and all help. I know that Mechanical has names for his two; I haven't been able to come up with anything yet. I just call them "the girls".

the mh throws more heat than the hps

if you are running a 400 watt mag coil ballast in an open reflector design I recommend you consider one of these

and flip them at your 35 day mark

I think you are gonna want to flip at 35 days, but your right it will all depend on how the next 2 weeks go though.

Thanks for the link, I have read a little about the CMH on here. This ballast and hood is around 5 years old and the hood does have a glass panel, it's not open. It is a 430w HPS ballast and I use a 400w MH for vegging and will be changing to a Hortilux 430w Super HPS bulb for flowering. Using only oscillating fans, I am able to keep the temps at the plant tops at 75 degrees with the hood 10-11 inches away. This is what I have for this time and I will upgrade for the next. I'm sure that you saw the photo on page 3. If I'm able to keep the temps reasonable without air moving over the bulb, what would that do for me? I would upgrade to a cool tube if it would be better for next time. This area is not a small enclosed space. It is a pvc frame wrapped with orca grow film in a larger room. The top is open, not enclosed so the heat doesn't get trapped.

A glass is ok with the cmh but probably not needed given good ventilation as the ceramic arc tube blocks most of the IR

dude when I started growing I was using fluorescent tubes, 2 in a long ass fixture they had thrown out at a school nearby along with 2 incandescents!!

Was all there was back then. HID was not around or if it was was too fucking expensive

Yes dont really want to be over 30-36 inches with a 400 unless you have great, lower/side lighting

Nothing wirng with your bulbs...just wanted to share cmh with you as it has an awesome spectrum for plants and can be used adequately from sprout to chop

I think your doing great man. Your new to this, and most people don't start with big grows and a bunch of gear. I also started with some floro tubes, mine were only 24" ones and I was growing under a bathroom cabinet. For starting out you are a mile and a half ahead of where I was. It has taken me many years and a ton of reading to get my garden to were it is today, and I think it will prolly take me a couple more years to get my garden where I want it to be.

I also bet he was things change that in that 30 years you've seen the whole industry do a 360 a couple times. All the new gear, as well as the horticultural knowledge being applied in new ways.

well lights have improved...fertilizers have gone crazy and IMO haven't improved...hid was a godsend...I suspect soon that leds and/or mh plasma will win over hid...but not yet...and IMO BREEDING has DIMINISHED mj with all the damned "indicas" thrown into the mix

Thats pretty true.I think leds will be the future to ,and i see what you mean ,alot of great sativas having their high dulled down just to speed them up .. guess it's just a sign of the times ,people want quick bud ,not great bud.As long as they don't start breeding autoflowers into everything..god i hope they don't start doing that.

fortunately they are not very popular and I too hope it remains that way...pure sats are very rare hence why I am now focusing on obtaining those seeds

I have never understood why autos have gotten as much attention as they do. They seem completely pointless to me for just about any reason. I guess maybe they would be cool if you wanted to grow a plant by the window in your living room.

I wan't planning on doing any breeding projects any time soon so I didn't try to get pollen, but maybe we can start breeding the indica back out of somestuff. Take some 80/20 sativa doms and cross them for sativa traits, then maybe cross to a pure sativa and back cross on its self. I bet we could get pretty close, sadly I don't have a setup really designed to run sativas atm.
