Want to start growing and want to do it right!

Ok so to start with I'm willing to spend some money from my summer job. I have a 2' x 6 ' empty closet so I figure 5 plants would leave enough room for flowering. Probably going to veg grow with 2 FLs and 2 CFLs close to the plants if that sounds good, and then I'm thinking of buying this 400w HPS I found on craiglist, includes ballast, bulb, hood and timer for 200$ (practically new, in box). Is this a good deal, and will it be able to cover 2' x 6' (I can probably put my plants closer together but the 2' width limitation is troublesome). The 400w HPS will be noticable on the electric bill correct? Any advice or criticism on my basic lighting/ set up would be appreciate!

EDIT: forgot to mention that I want to grow Arjan's Haze #3 although I am open to suggestions

$200.00 for a used ballast and bulb sounds like a lot to me. Back in the day i bought a used 400w hps ballast with a 'new' bulb + hood from my local hydro shop for less then that. I wouldn't recomend using a used bulb, who knows how many hours are on it. If your running a 400w HID for 12 hours a day, your power bill might go up $15.00 a month tops.

you can fit more than five plants in your space under a 400 watter. My room is a little over three feet long two feet wide and seven feet tall and I put six in there and they do just fine you can check out my journal in my signature line if you want. and yes 200 is too much for a used 400 watter you can get a brand new for 150. I just got an other 400 watter off craiglist brand new never used for 100.

the cost all depnds on where you at. If the cost per kilowatts are high you gon pay high.
200 for a 400w hell naw dont buy that.
you can get a 400watter for $117 the whole thing. for 200 you could get a 400w with cootube and still have $ left over for shipping.

once you find out how much per kilowatt then you can calculate how much it costs.

It's not basic lighting thats a good plan except for the light price.
2flouros and 2 cfls are not bad.
