The purpose of the netting is to support the plants for me personally, I do use it to space out branches and even the canopy but not like true SCROG. I have learned it is best to grow the plants into the netting and I do that by setting 2 layers of netting above the plants when they move to flower, slowly weaving branches through squares keeping everything as even and tidy as possible. There is no law that you need to prune up to the net either.
I have a VEG room and a BLOOM room with different configurations, in my VEG room I simply top the plants repeatedly as they grow until the bloom room is cleared, I sometimes veg longer than 60 days without problems.. Call it a waste of time, I call it larger plants with bigger returns.
It really all comes down to preference and what you're actually trying to accomplish with the netting.
