Vero COB Build to Supplement a CLW SolarStorm440

Though that I would share my first LED build with everyone. I have been running a 4 x 4 flood/drain set up with a California Lightworks Solarstorm 440. This a great light and has supplemental UV-B to help with increased potency. Unfortunately I was not seeing the yields that I desired and decided to build a square donut shaped COB light to supplement the 440.

I was up in the San Francisco area and stopped in to RapidLED. Mike was super helpful and he hooked me up with all of the components that I would need for my build. I purchased the "L" profile aluminum for the frame from Onlinemetals.... way less expensive than buying at Home Depot or Lowes.

I used 4 Vero 29D 3000K 90CRI placed at 12, 3 ,6 and 9 oclock, and 4 Vero 29D 3500K 80CRI placed in the 4 corners. I have a MW HLG 480H-C1400B running the 8 COBS at about 52Watts each. Total wattage for the COB build and the CLW SS440 is about 750 Watts Max.

Moved 20 girls from my Veg tent into the my flower tent about 10 days ago. I'm running the 440 in flower mode and the COBS at about 40%.... and WOW they are super bright at 40%. I intend to slowly increase the COB intensity as the grow progresses through flowering.

Thanks to the LED Gardener for all of your great articles and videos and a shout out to Growmau5 and Greengenes for all the guidance on DIY light building.

you stole my idea! i'm gonna add 3 Citi Cobs on each side of my old SS400 for an extra 480 watts. the cobs are 3000K so i was thinking of running the CLW in veg mode with UV in flowering for a bit more blues . thoughts?

keep the pics coming!

Which 440? the one with 44 diodes per board or the ones with 72 osrams per board?

the latter are at least 10% more efficient

Are you planning on vegging and flowering with this set-up or just flowering? If just flowering, not sure why you would not want to run the SS440 in full flower mode and adjust the COBS power as you progress further into flowering. Although I have not measured PPFD in my setup.... with the 8 cobs evenly spaced around the 440, the entire 4 x 4 canopy is evenly illuminated.... zero dead spots. You should give the 6 CITI's a try and see hpw it goes, you can always add 2 more COBS if necessary and re-arrange your frame.

both veg and flower. just the CLW for veg and then all for flower. i was thinking the extra blues of the veg mode would offset the more red of the COBS. i'll probably end up trying both though.

I bought 3/4" angle aluminum at my local "Do It Best" hardware store for $7.99 per 8 foot, and 8 foot U-channel for $10.99. Onlinemetals doesn't save me anything when shipping is added in.
