HPS works great. Longer internodes are common so if vertical space is limited use metal halide for veg and hps for flower. I don't own MH bulbs.

I've use hps bulbs for veg. No need to waste money on two sets of bulbs. I notice no difference in the way my strains grow between the two.

I'm vegging under HPS. No problems. I added 2 blue CFL's just for insurance.. With my Autoflower plant I actually wish she would stretch.. She is so bushy that it's hard to see what's going on with her.

I've done both. I can get 1000w mh bulbs for $50 (taxes in; Symban's: seem pretty good). I de-wire the ignitor and run the mh. Then i rewire the ignitor and use HPS for bloom. There is definitely convenience to running just HPS. I can get HPS bulbs for $40 (taxes in: Flora sun: seem pretty good). Once you know the plants you're working with do what works imho.
Yeah, i duplicated bulbs but it was nice to be able to evaluate their performance for vegging. I'll probably just use HPS in the future for convenience, lotsa people seem to do it and it works fine. I can definitely see HPS being helpful for growing bushes or trees; nice to have the airflow inside not just around the plant.
I think this kinda stuff is fun to figure out although i have to say, the really smart campers read about other guys mistakes so they don't make them! I've done a few doozies myself so I"ve been on both sides of the equation LOL

they were rooted.
I wasn't worried about stretch as I plan to
supercop them down to size after I transplant them and use them in my first
scrog
I topped the shit out if them.
Anyway im very impressed with that 1 tiny light keeping all that area healthy.

U say no need to waste money on two bulbs. But you use twice the hours on the important bulb. Honestly. Veg with the mh. Your plants will love you. I personally like the hortilux blue. But this round I used a 18.00 bulb for veg. And well 5 weeks from seed to this 18.00 mh bulb

I veg my moms on daylight tubes 24/0d and 150w frosted MH 18/6d. If you have to burn up your hps on a veg go for it. I would if I had to. I was using 400w MH's on my moms but I found that to be overkill. I keep seven moms on 320w's daylight tubes and the 150 goes to where it's needed to develope the next set of shoots. I have a harder time keeping my moms at bay than getting them to grow so I keep the temp down to 60-65f and no hid when snips are not required.

I have an experiment going in a similar circumstance 150 watt hps about 3 ft above this one and its 3 weeks from cut. Not terrible stretching.

Take some strings and LST it a bit. (bend the branches) allowing light to penetrate and trim some fan leaves. You'll see whats going on, and so will your buds.
My auto was 10 inches tall and yielded 34grams under cfl
