Vegging in flood tray without hydroton

Hello, I am currently on my first grow in a tent with an ebb and flow 2x2 flood tray system under a 20k etc... and sense I dont have a flowering tent setup yet I added hydroton to the tray just to do a straight through grow but my next grow I will setup a flowering room and so far I have found it very difficult to move these plants when using rockwool and its buried in hydroton because if all the stray roots.

So my question is just like the name of the thread suggests. Can I veg these plants for months at a time just in rockwool and let the roots float around when flooding the tray and then when the time comes just transplant the rockwool cube and long roots into another tray with hydroton???

I have seen it done on these youtube series of how to grow cannabis where green dude vegges all his plants just in a tray and lets the roots grow in the light and everything. This a good or bad idea?

P.S my avatar is a recent photo of my grow. Hard to believe these plants are only 2 weeks into veg and 3 weeks old sense germination. I like to tell myself im setting records. Might throw into flowering after 1 month of veg instead of 2, didnt think my first grow would go so smooth and fast.

This is how I learned to grow actually. In just rockwool. Yeah it's fine. Roots wont grow long and far past the RW block because the air will air prune them. Unless you keep a small pool of water at the bottom of the flood tray the roots wont grow past the footprint of the RW cube.
Basically, you leave the plastic on the sides of the rockwool so the roots grow straight down. Once the roots grow out of the bottom of the RW cube, you buy the next biggest cube, cut a square in it the size of the old one, and put it in the new cube. Then just rinse and repeat. You can continue this until you get the size plant you want.

I know a guy that grows in only 6x6 rockwool no hydroton at all I seen his flowering room and didnt notice any roots sticking out of the rockwool so imo yes you can grow with only rockwoll no hydroton.

You don't need the hydroton...but you don't want your roots to die back also so buying the right size cube for the amount of time you will veg is very important because if your cube is too small then roots will be naturally air pruned when exposed to air and light meaning roots wont grow as big as needed..this is very important because bigger root mass = bigger yield..........so consider this when using rockwool cubes only for veg......

I grow in 6 inch net cups filled with peagravel.I have a 2x4 grow tray that i made a lid for out of celotex.cut out 8 holes and suspended the net cups in mid air. They grow for up to 4 months this way.but without a cover my root mass would not be nearly as impressive therfore not returning a good yield.
Go buy something,a piece of wood, celotex, plastic construction trash bags, anything that will block out light cut holes for your plants to sit and watch them grow. You will need to have a little more water in your res, because the flood level will be higher, but you will be able to look at the roots whenever you want and not worry about breaking any
