Various Questions For a beginner

I’m preparing a grow tent, and have a few questions. I’m going with a dwc hydroponics setup.

does my grow tent exhaust/fan have to point outside? It can get to 0 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, so it might be better to avoid this if possible. My exhaust is on the right side of my tent, towards the top. If I can avoid going outside, Should I have the exhaust pointed straight outward, or upward? Does it matter?

If I point it outside, is it likely my neighbor (in a duplex) would smell it? I have a carbon filter inside my tent hooked up to the fan, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t entirely eliminate the smell. It seems some strains (northern lights?) smell less than others, are there any strains you recommend that don’t smell as much? Conversely, is there any very smelly strains you recommend I avoid?

I purchased a silencer for my fan, and just as a test I set my air pump inside it (it was still able to intake air, and it seemed to quiet it down. Currently I have my air pump hanging from the grow tent, and I heard it reduced vibrations, quieting it. However has anyone tried using like acoustic foam to absorb sound? I’m thinking I’ll set it in this microphone box, and put more foam on top to try and absorb sound (while still allowing sufficient access to air). Has anyone tried something like this?

Silencer:
VIVOSUN 6 Inch Noise Reducer Silencer for Inline Duct Fan [Couldn’t post link, you’ll have to search for it]

Microphone box:
TroyStudio Portable Sound Recording Vocal Booth Box - |Reflection Filter & Microphone Isolation Shied| - |Large, Foldable, Stand Mountable, Super Dense Sound Absorbing Foam| (Small Size) [Couldn’t post link, you’ll have to search for it]

My tap water, after filtering it with a carbon filter, should have no chlorine/Chloramine correct? And it comes out at about 630ppm. Should I avoid using it? Or since it’s been filtered, is it okay to use? Maybe for clones I’ll use store bought water, because I’ve seen that they need a lower ppm correct?

Is there a “test plant” that you recommend? Seeds seem to be a little expensive, and if I’m going to mess up, I rather it be on something cheaper. For example, is mint a good test dummy? Allows me to test the smell being filtered, and I can attempt to clone it.

Do you have any tips or are there any common mistakes you want me to avoid?

Dont over think things, grow and adapt as you do it, if you drink your tap water its more than fine for you plants .
plant some cheap seeds and have a go, learning is by doing and your at that stage.

do it.

the best way to quiet an exhaust fan is to slow it down, use a speed controller, i like the type called "Variac speed controller" they cost a bit more but they use a much better electric curve so the fans run smoother without hum at slower speeds,,, always buy a fan about twice as big as you need and then slow that fan down and they get whisper quiet,, without a bunch of gadgets,,, ( a little last to the party i know,,),, hopefully you can use the things you have alredy purchased

you do not have to vent outside,, but you will be chooosing who gets to smell it,, you or the neighbor haha,, i vent outside so i dont stink up my own house,
also maybe once a day you will need to vent that room so you get fresh air in somehow, often times if there are a bunch of humans in the room, you help each other,, we breath out c02 and they breath in co2,, ,they breath out oxygen and we breath it in,, a win win,, any how, if you dont vent out you will need to monitor your humidity in the room, since any evaporatiob from the plants and soil will remain in the room,,
