Hey guys. I am trying to make something that Knotty has made in the end of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNTwkfagkEE&list=UUC0gbevobKOMRA6RPzwcVNg&index=4

I am good at making BHO and have been doing it for several years. usually I do 60 or so gram runs out of my honey bee extractor with a 3 or 4 cans of colibri butane and get around 7 or so grams back of very nice oil.

anyways, I am acquiring a lb of VERY nice bottoms/shake and was planning on turning most of it into oil.

I was planning on buying an XL extractor and an electric vacuum pump from these guys but am not 100% sure on the pump yet... what do you guys think?

Sounds like too much money! I picked up a CPS Pro-Set VP6D 6.2 cfm single stage for $195, and a Robinair 15500 5 cfm two stage for $185 off of E-bay.

Fuck thats BHO stuff makes some ICE wax man its much better really. It tastes better smokes better you can dab it like BHO and you know what its clean. Made with just ice and water only H2o in the process. If your a true conneseur then you go with the ice wax. I couldnt imagine how fun it would be too make a bunch of full melt bubble with a pound of good trim i would be so fucken set.

alright, so. I did a little more research regarding the vac purging and found a better dessicator (ones the real "pros" use) that can be heated while vac purging... now I am wondering. should I get the 1.5, 2, or 3 gallon one? is there any difference/cons to having a large one like a 3 gallon dessicator?

130$ for a 1.5 gallon: http://www.ebay.com/itm/110982258796?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

or 3 gallon for about 20$ more: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-GAL-VACUUM-CHAMBER-ALUMINUM-STABILIZED-BURL-WOOD-DE-GASS-SILICONE-MOLD-/110986473457?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid=111000&algo=REC.CURRENT&ao=1&asc=14&meid=4505026950438711469&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=2&sd=110982258796&

seems like "VAC-IT PRO" brand are a better stainless steel dessicator with a better lid/sealing method... but I cant seem to find them on ebay.

now. I need to figure out what I need for a pump, as well as what the micron ratings mean. I am pretty sure I want a 2 stage pump, and maybe 2.5 or so CFM?

also.. in the video in the first post, is that guy using "teflon" paper? would parchment/cooking/wax paper work the same?

aanddddd lastly, regarding the bubble hash (ICE wax right?) I am going to be trying that too. I bought these no name bubble bags off ebay for 60$ and am going to give them a try...the bubble hash kind of scares me, I am scared to screw it up and it seems that the return is very low. http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Bag-5-Gallon-Herbal-Ice-Bubble-Hash-Extractor-Kit-Bag-Pressing-Screen-/180983734441?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2378a0a9

so this is the pump you used? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Robinair-15500-Vacuum-Pump-5-CFM-Two-Stage-110V-/200866988441?pt=BI_Pumps&hash=item2ec49b0199

so 200$ for the pump and 150$ for the dessicator I am still 350$ deep but its 10x better than extractionexperts, although I would still like to buy their XL tube... or is there a better one out there?

could you give me a quick run down on how these pumps work, mainly the pump oil and what it does/how it works/why its needed?

also. I seem to be confused on how pressure works. I was taught that atmospheric pressure is 29.97" or mercury, or 706mm, 14.7 psi. 101 kpa... whatever. seems like you guys use inches of mercury.

so, 29.97" atmospheric pressure in a mercury tube that is inverted into a bowl of mercury... if you put a suction on the whole system, it would raise/suck up the mercury in the BOWL, causing the mercury in the tube to LOWER... down to 25, 20, 15"... however strong the vacuum is... so seems to me that a strong vacuum would make the gauge go down to 1 or 2" of mercury. all these ads say that the pumps will pull 27-29" of mercury... does that mean that it is pulling an almost perfect vacuum and cant get much stronger?

I think it all comes down to me confusing psia (atmoshperic) and psig (gauge pressure) right?

well. just got the lb and boy is it nice. its not shake.. its bottom of the bag.. he gave me like 17oz because thats just what happened to be there and was feeling generous for new years :)

I am not too sure what to do with it. buy a 200$ pump and 150$ dessicator and 150$ worth of butane and make some BHO.... or throw half of it through my new bubble bags.

I seen a video online where Matt Rize made some bubble hash and he threw in what looked like over a lb and his return didnt look that spectacular at all..... but then again, im just a noob to the hash scene.

I also got an 8 bag set.. I think I would use only 3 or 4 of them.

They are a rotary vane pump and besides lubrication, they need good oil for a vane seal.

Yes, it means that it has reduced the absolute pressure close to zero.

hmm. interesting. I wonder if its worth getting 350$ worth of stuff to purge the BHO or if I should just try making some hash.

if I put in 200G of nice bottoms how much hash should I expect to get out?

making bubble hash... dont expect good returns. thats all i can say. Especially if your a noob and dont have the right equipment.

About half what you can get with BHO. If you beat the material enough to get all the resin with ice water, you beat a lot of green material into the hash. We might typically kif 10% and extract the rest with a solvent.

Dry sieving is another avenue you might explore, if you are looking for cheaper equipment and like the smell and taste of terpenes in the morning. Frames are easy to build from free scrap and silk mat is cheap. http://skunkpharmresearch.com/diy-sieving-frames/

hmm. so im in quite the predicament. I am not a fan of dry sieved hash, or ISO oil. and would rather not do it those ways.

the bubble hash really scares me because of the very low returns.

and the butane honey oil has potential to get very expensive... but I know what im doing and could make a very potent product. I think I might bite the bullet and order the vac chamber for 150$, and that bad ass pump for 200$. I am not sure if ill order a new extractor for 100$ or use my older plastic "honey bee extractor". and then I need to go spend 100$ and get around 20 cans of butane... it adds up fast.

I seen that knotty got 110G of oil out of 1lb of material... at 30-40$ per gram it becomes worth it and im sure thats a pretty fair value on a gram of that potent stuff.

also. seems like he really overcomplicated that screen thing.... seems like something like that could be made in about 10 minutes with a few strips of wood and about 25 nails, screws....

so in order to make bho i need a vac chamber and a pump as well? I have about a lb of trim that i would like to turn into bho also...

well technically you dont NEED one... but if you REALLY wanna step it up a knotch, and got a extra few hundreds bucks kicking around, and are VERY concerned on removing ALL of the butane and being easy on your lungs then yeah. a vac and chamber is nice.

im sure you can get a cheap dessicator and a hand pump for under 100$.... but ive learned that cheap pays twice, sometimes 3 times. so nowadays I prefer to buy the best, or almost best that you can get. IMO that would be a nice stainless steel dessicator that you can heat while you purge. very important step. as well as a nice pump. the one I want is probably a little overkill. but id rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

ive been making BHO for 5 years now. usually 1 oz or so and using around 4 cans for that oz at the start and with lots of purging in hot water, its always turned out very nice! I couldnt imagine only rinsing an oz with only 1 can of butane! maybe its my small extractor or the amount that I chop it, but by the time you run 1 can through it youve only got a few drops in the dish and the weed is still soaked in thc rich butane. ive never vacuum purged and was always able to produce a very nice oil that didnt crack or pop when you smoked it.

I have friends who didnt care when they make it. 14 grams of bud, 2 or 3 cans. boil off in hot water outside, not even changing water when it cools off. let it sit for 10-15 mins. heat the bubbles with the lighter for 2 minutes, and then start smoking it on the blades. not saying thats good or anything, but just goes to show how much more I/we purge it compared to some people that just dont care, and are more about quantity than quality.

you can get a better pump and a bigger chamber from the same companies for less on amazon or ebay. those "extraction experts" are just flipping equipment.

I am getting them off ebay and not from extractionexperts.

cheapest on ebay is 125$ for a nice 2 gallon SS dessicator and 180 + 25$ shipping on that 5CFM 2 stage robinair pump.

wow. that sounds pricey!!

if I were to make bubble hash. I dont want to use all 8 bags that I have... what would you guys recommend bags to use if I were to only use 3 or 4 of them?

im thinking 220 for the garbage. 90 for smoke, 75 for smoke, and 40 or 23 for something else?
