Hello,
The UV sterilization will not affect the nutrients; however they can
affect the beneficial bacteria in a negative way.
This of course (if growing organically) can in turn have negative effects on
your nutrient uptake.
The reason here is (as you may already know), in an organic nutrient plan
you need beneficial bacteria and fungi to help in the breaking down of the
organic ingredients to help the plant uptake the finished food.
Without the bacteria and fungi your nutrient delivery is drastically
reduced.
Now as far as how it works?
Venturi action would best describe the process.
The air pump forces air into the unit and at the same time causes a vacuum,
pulling water into the "bulb chamber".
Once the water reaches the chamber the UV bulb comes in contact with the
water and treats it.
Any organism that absorbs the UV will have its DNA destroyed or inactivated
this renders the "life" to the point it cannot reproduce.
The final stage would be the release of the oxygenated water, which also
continues to churn the water and keep it mixed so any pathogen or any other
(intruder) can keep moving and eventually pass over the UV bulb.
In my opinion UV is best used with a Chemical nutrient plan or water
gardening.
If Algae is a problem, regular reservoir cleanings and a lid should fix most
growers problems.
