UV sterilizer will sterilize the water ONLY and not help with system cleaning etc.
It will have no where near the effects of hydrogen peroxide.

sterilizing the water is the idea. I looked on the net and theres other forums saying it works great. anybody else have knoledge of this

A friend of mine would recirculate water in his reservoir through a UV sterilizer. It would keep down on bacteria and algae growth in the reservoir, he could even keep the reservoir open to the air and allow light in and nothing would grow in it. Better than using chemicals.

this is and was why I was trying to research the uv idea, trying to eliminate the use of H202 or at leasst lessen it.
ATARIJEDI can you find out the brand or model hes using and if there was any draw backs to it?

ive seen something called a microbal disc it supposed to kill all bacteria freschatank i think its called not sure if your interested init its supposed to keep water clean i am using DM zone at the min an my water smells like swimming pool an is crystal clear, using this is kept my roots pearly white i had the slime before an h202 did not even make a scratch on it. I would look into the pond uv sterilizers as there outside have x amount of decaying matter plus algae growth, also i found another good thread that they use pond dye its a blue colour an it stops algae growth etc

If your water smells like a swimming pool, that probably means there is chlorine in the water, not that its a bad thing, just figured you should know if you already didn't. As for the microbial discs, it is silver looking, correct? Meaning it is probably a copper disc coated in 99% silver, which will kill pretty much any single celled organism that touches it.

well killing organisms is the goal here, Im on well water so theres no chlorine in it although I add bleach every week to help kill the bactiria
plants are doing great roots look good just bothers me that shits in there

If your thinking of using it to kill say root rot it won't work, the light has to see to kill, it will not kill pathogens attached to your roots or deep in the root ball. Just as an aside root rot happens to plants that are stressed.

If your running well water you should get it tested for ppm you might want to look into an ro system also. Most well water has a high ppm value mine is 380ppm but have a buddy that has 700ppm. Just a thought on your water.

There are a few things to consider prior to using UV light filtration. First would be, what do you want to kill? A close second would be, how much UV light does it take to kill.....whatever it is you want to kill. It also helps to know that a typical UV light source will degrade to about 50% of it's output within 6 months. Sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less; many factors come into play. This information helps you plan for the right equipment. It is suggested that you purchase a UV source which will emit at least twice the amount of light required to kill....whatever it is you want to kill, unless you don't want it to be killing whatever it is you want to kill in six months. Simply passing a living creature underneath a UV light doesn't necessarily mean it's going to die as a result.

my ppm out of the tap is 83 so I feel a ro isnt needed. but the root rot is coming from the bactiria growing in the res
so the light with a recycleing pump should kill this shit right? ive tryed bleach/H202 and it keeps shit ok but not 100%
killing this shit, looking into DM-zone just not alot of people use it on RIU so getting more than one positive is turning
out to be hard.

Your good at 83ppm, whats you temp in the res? You could run roots excel, aqushield, sm90, clean with bleach or HTH Algacide 10

66f to 69f in the res and I have a weekly cycle, first day of the week is H202 at 7ML per gal and the halfway point of the week
I put 10ML of plain bleach and the end of the week is H202 same mix, and waters clear and plant are rocking but the res tank
walls and the pump filter bags have a brown slime that gathers :( I stay away from all organic sups just advanced inorganic nute
line. Im realy looking into this DM zone

no its the dutch master zone the only nutes that are in my system is DM zone sensi grow A+B an a touch of ph down thats it i'm going K.I.S.S this time had nothing but probs adding all the other additives etc
hellraizer here is the link to microdisc there on the bay an a whole other load of sites http://www.aquamidas.com/fresha-tank-2-p.asp this is what they say about it
Fresha Tank

FreshaTank uses the same industrial silver as found in drinking water purifiers, hot tub filters and many medical items including burns victims.
FreshaTank is a Microbial product which is placed in a fish tank or waterbutt, the strong microbial action of the 99.9% pure industrial silver destroys fungal, viral, bacterial micro-organisms and parasites in the reproductive stage, this keeps fish healthier, prevents the spread of disease, reduces nitrates and bacteria levels. Ammonia levels are reduced along with phosphates and nitrates due to the reduced levels of bacteria in the water, however Freshatank does not replace the need for usual regular maintenance.
  • The pure microbial silver coating kills fungal, viral and bacterial microbes on contact.
  • Fish tanks stay cleaner with FreshaTank.
  • FreshaTank is patented and approved.
  • FreshaTank eliminates foul smelling water.
  • FreshaTank can be used in waterbutts.
  • FreshaTank helps prevent the spread of disease.
  • FreshaTank is re-useable, everlasting and can be used with all fish.
  • FreshaTank kills algae in the water which slows down algae forming on the glass.
  • FreshaTank is totally safe and does not leach metals into the water
