Using natural sunlight indoors. Cheapest and easiest way to grow.

Ok, so this set up wont suit most people. But if it does then it is easy, cheap and requires almost no equipment or materials.

My bedroom was once an attic so it has skylights. I smoked joints in that room for two years before i even thought about growing, and I wish id done so sooner.

My setup uses just two five gallon grow bags each filled with peat moss and vermiculite and worm castings in a ration of about 1/10.
Pictured are 5 week flowered cheese.

Worm castings requires a vermicomposter which is essentially a bin of worms peatmoss which you feed organic waste. The worm shit is worm castings which are really good for the plant. Check the forum on advanced cultivation in the thread earthworms for more precise info on this matter. This requires no chemical fertilizers and can never cause nute burn, which is a common beginner mistake. I myself almost killed a plant as many do. The worm bin costs 40 bucks or so to setup yourself. You can also buy ones at wromfactory.com for like 90. But you never have to buy fertilizers again, plus the plants will love you for it. So green and happy.

I live in a region with long winters and short days so it is not ideal for me to grow in the fall/winter but i still get good yields and have no potency issue. These were grown in the fall with only maybe 4 hours on sunlight a day.

In my first grow my plants got too big. This time I tied them down as they were growing to keep them short and bushy. This is called low stress training. This is also helpful if you live in a busy area and don’t want the plants to become visible to people as they get too big.

The other issue I have is that I have an east and west facing skylight which means if I want to give the plants all the light I can I must move them midday. As a stoner/student this is not a problem for my self, probably an issue for most. Ideally though you would have a south facing skylight and would not have to move them at all. On that note…..

Currently I am forced to move them into a closet during their rest cycles. This is a pain in the ass and the main reason I am only growing two plants currently (also the winters coming). Perhaps you could cover the skylight at night and enclose the plants in some sort of tent like thing.

My point is that my setup is the least ideal that it could. I would not have thought that could survive on 4 hours a day of light, but they do and look beautiful. And if you could get 8-12 hours of natural sunlight through a window for most of the year, then I hope you use it.

Anyways, like I said this wont work for a lot of people, especially if discretion is an issue. But if you do have a south facing skylight or bay window that you could partially obstruct, think about using it to its full potential. The suns there for a reason.

And just so you know im not just talking shit. This is a nug from my first ever attempt at growing.

Cheers

Reading this thread reminds me of something I have always wondered about - why hasn't anyone ever reported on a truely "Solar powered" grow cabinet? You know what I mean? Something like a greenhouse, but it's really just an "outdoor cabinet" with no roof, letting the sunshine in! It would have "Mylar walls" and everything, even ventilation fans if needed.

Anyone ever try this? I've always meant to - never got around to it! It "kind of" sounds like what you have going on there!

Thanks, smppro, for the link! I didn't read the whole thread yet (it was like 12 pages, or something). But, yeah, something like that! Maybe a little bigger - maybe a few more "bells and whistles" - but that's the basic idea! Maybe I'll try it too!

I have a chance at buying a pretty isolated piece of land with a house with a big attic, for cheap. I have thought of putting big skylights in it and doing a grow. my concern is that it would show up on Google satellite maps.

I have been thinking about some sort of material on the windows that would obstruct viewing in, but would not significantly stop sunlight.

any suggestions?

You can use that cheappo 1 or 2 mil plastic sheeting material that they sell at any hardware store - it's not really clear, it's kind of "Smokey" colored. It's "transparent" if it's touching something - but from a few inches or feet away - it only shows a vague outline. Just hang that stuff underneath your skylights. They even make this stuff special "Heavy-Duty" for greenhouses, up to 6 or 8 mil thick, and treated for UV protection.

Im planning on doing a greenhouse sometime this year when I can come up with funds. I already grow organic vegetables in my backyard so Im hopping setting up a greenhouse wont be too suspicious.

Nice grow, you have obviously given a lot of thought to how you wanted it to go.

I grow in sunny Spain, I currently have 3 plants on my roof - if I lived in a less liberal country I would probably have a greenhouse - fitted with frosted glass, and regularly give my neighbours gifts of tomatoes.

You have me seriously considering putting attic skylights in an unused storage area of our two story house. It think it would be an amazing lst space. Thanks for the "simple" idea. lol

Thanks for the compliment. I got a pretty good crop this year but if I had a greenhouse I could have done so much more. I live in Ohio where it starts to get too cold to grow early October which really sucks because there is still plenty of daylight just too damn cold. A greenhouse with HPS lights for supplemental lighting would solve all my probs. I just haven't had the money or ability to get the gear I need but Hopefully come spring I will and then if all goes well I will be able to grow outdoors most of the year and pay way less in electricity because I won't have to run as many lights indoor.

i am a newbie, i just put 6 down, for now all i have is my windows(i move my germs according to the time of day). i live in ga, the weather is perking up with strong sunshine. my set up is a mini greenhouse i constructed. i can't afford lights right now, so basically i am winging it. i've had one harvest(3 joints). yeah i know but those three were FIRE! for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, to me it was awesome to get it that far. my question is do i have a clue. i started my germs in coco fiber pellets, i plan on doing a soil grow with mg. i have flushed some of my soil in preparation for repotting and added coco fiber. am i close? somebody pls tell me. i figured since ga really has no winter and stays HOT till oct or nov that the window light will be cool. i plan on putting them in a closet to flower. i have one light now, its a 23watt cfl w/reflector, i was planning on getting two more because my grow is very small. i bought books and have studied them extensively. there is so much contradiction with different articles and such. i'm figuring to play it by ear
