Using lavarock as filter.

Im into ebb and flow right now, got pots filled with hydroton.
Last week i found info on filtering water-agriculture systems with lavarock.
Cant find it anymore, but i thought it might work.

The space around my pots in my flood table could be filled with lavarocks, and
It is hard to keep the resevoir clean, but why would i do it if benificial bacteria in the lavarock could filter my system?
This guy on youtube uses this idea with aquaponics:
Aquaponics lavarock

Could this prevent algea or bad fungee?
Another benefit would be that i dont have that much water sitting in my flood table.

I used to have small mesh bags filled with pumice in my DWC buckets when I was starting. I figured since I'm adding beneficial bacteria I might as well have something porous for them to "live in". No idea if it worked or not, it was just something that was discussed on a chili forum at the time.

Thanks,
Do you Guys think IT could work?
There are also used in bioponics (organic hydroponics)
I tried self contained aquaponic set up in the early 90's. And the substrate covered tables or filled troughs. Lava rock is good at growing a small colony due to its large pores.
It grows harmful algae at a much faster rate if not kept in the dark. I would suggest aquarium gavel or honestly a live sand filter for saltwater set ups in your drain.

Complicated and not easy. Or cheap.

Thanks, so if i keep the rocks in the dark it could work?

In aquaponics the use these Stones to make organic nitrogen available for the plants
