Use Females To Make Seeds?

Hello,

If I wanted a plant to be used mainly to create seeds for future grows can I take one male plant and a female plant from my original grow area. Walk a few hundred feed away and replant them somewhere else. Would this make the female produce seeds? How many usable seeds do females produce on average?

I guess to summarize, would it just be smarted to leave the female, let it grow, toss the males (or check to see if they are possibly smokeable) sell it the female bud, and buy seeds with that money?

Thanks everyone.

I'll answer your second question first. Yes. It's much wiser to do that.

Now to your original question. No, that will not produce feminized seeds, just the usual mix. But it is useful if both the female and male have traits you want to grow out for an eventual stabilised phenotype. And um... moving them a few hundred feet away would not spare your other females. Males can pollenate every female in a square mile (or further) if conditions are right. And a plant usually produces hundreds of seeds. Keep in mind that once a bud is pollenated, the plants put almost all of their energy into producing seeds.

Hope that helps. If you're interested in breeding, use the search feature on here. There are many skilled breeders on this site... I'm not one of them. I just know the basics.

I have a different answer then Ethnobotanist to your second question. I say taking a female plant and a male plant out of the grow area is a great way to get seeds... in fact, it is the best way to get them. It is much cheaper then ordering them in the mail and will save you thousands of dollars over the years (if you continue to grow).

You do want to get the male and the female very far away from your other plants, preferably through some woods. A hundred yards would do okay, but you would still get some residual seeds on your other plants (most likely). But it would be a lot better then if you left the male there with them.

A better way to get seeds is to move the male (with no females) by itself a couple hundred hards away. It doesn't even have to be in a great spot... males don't need as much sunlight... you don't care about him being the healthiest plant in the world, you just want to use him for some pollen.

Once the girls are ready to be pollinated shake some pollen from the male into a bag. Get a Q-tip and apply a little pollen to some of the buds of one of your females. It doesn't take much. Again, this will probably result in some pollination of the other girls, but it won't be as much as if you left the male there. To reduce the likelihood that other females get pollinated, lightly mist them with water before you pollinate the chosen girl. The water will help block the pollen. Just don't mist the girl you do want pollinated.

Once you get all your hundreds of seeds (which are worth like $1000 or more if you had to buy them) you can stick them in the freezer with some dry rice (to keep them dry) and they'll last like 10 years. Then you can grow sensimilla (killing all the males) for a few years before you ever have to bother with pollination again.

In my opinion, that is a lot better then having to drop $50 to $100 to order a few lousy seeds in the mail.
