Yea .. I would say what I built is better then what they sale at a fraction of cost. I use tank fitting on mine instead of leaking uniseals .
I can assure u that yours is aa fraction of the system and quality. You would need exact specs to have anything compareable. I ccan diy with the best of em. I made one out of 5 gallon buckets no way man theirs is designed by somme smart peoplewo get paid a lot of money to do that. Garun ntee

Meta, don't skip on a chiller. It'll save you a ton of headaches. You need lots of disolved oxygen, you ghet that w the right res temp. I setup 2 systems and use wort chillers ( a home brew item) daisy chained together so i can have 1 chiller doing both systems. Plus you need to plan on either a sterile res. or a bacterial one. You'll find guys w opinions on both schools of thought.
You got any brand/size suggestions?...I was looking at the one sold by Marine Depot ...

Bahaha!!...your probably just useless with tools. My diy 5gal undercurrent is almost 3 years old and doesn't leak a drop. If you cant get a uniseal leak tight, your drilling oval holes.

I can assure you mine is just as good . I have zero leaks and its built to fit my room . Cutting some holes in totes and getting water to circulate is not rocket science .. but I will agree with you.. they are some smart people making a lot of money!

Just take a 70 pint dehumidifier and make your own chiller. That's what I do works better than a 1hp chiller. I use it for an 8" ice box my rez and to cool my air pumps. I'm in a 4x4x7 tent inSide a 100º garage and my tent stays at 73 during the day and 68 at night!

Is the "epi" the reservoir?
"The container that has no plants"
IN THEORY
(I have yet to do this)
Under current DWC is a very easy DIY project as long as you don't mind doing some work.
you can use 3 or 5 gallon buckets or rubbermaid totes the containers don't really matter, just the plumbing.
its a continuous loop through as many grow pots you want to use plus a reservoir and maybe a chiller.

2" and 1" PVC Pipe
4 elbows-2"
1 tee-2"
1 reducing bushing from 2" to "1"
1 in line valve 1"
1" slip to 3/4" barb in nylon ( not black plastic, look with the brass fittings)
Pump for use outside of the reservoir with enough GPH and 3/4"barb fittings.
3/4" pipe 6' is tons

That is my reason to like this type DIY build
" because it is all on the same level".
no table on top with reservoir below.

I have height issues, lol

I have all the parts to build a system and will in the future.
2" uni seals are awesome but it takes some learning to get a pipe thru a seal.
I found cutting pipe at 45 degrees and beveling the outer edge about 1/6".
you just need some soapy dish detergent and water.
A little elbow Grease and the spin in.
IMHO
stoned newbie here!

Some of us are on a fixed income, that is why we DIY.
Not everyone can spend thousands on a system then more money on lights, fans, Nutes etc.
I know I cannot spend all that. It has taken two years just to buy everything other than the grow system.
I will be setting up a 4 site DWC undercurrent in 3.5 gallon black buckets for 4 plant per bucket.
I drilled the cover,

and yes I can build my own DIY system that is just as good as a commercial system.
if you buy a system, it will come disassembled, YOU have to build it.
If it uses PVC then it comes bare bones. As in sans PVC.
If it uses little lines between buckets like 1/2" or 3/4" than its going to move the liquid very slowly from bucket to bucket.

i am just my newbie .02 oh and 23 years in residential and commercial construction.

I will also set up a second 4 site system in 3.5 gallon buckets with a single 6" net pot built into cover.

I am also settin up an ebb & flow, DIY to run my Nursery.

It's not that much more money than it is if u DIY, but the modules are made of
Uv resiistant HDPE t plastic they are 8 gallons each. 8 gallons for a reason. The root growth will fill w 3 gallon bucket the first week let alone 3 plants in that little thing. It's in the works but hey I am very curious to the difference between the 2. I could be wrong but I didn't ask what kind of yield you are pulling with the DIY. I love DIY stuff but when so much is at stake why not have the best.

In a properly executed rdwc a 3.5 gallon module is not large enough.the module should never be kept all the way full.if using an 8 gallon module u start using six gallons per module.later into flower this number decreases to 4 gallons per module.it ensures that an ample amount of atmospheric oxygen is available to the non submerged root.in addition by inducing a drought condition essential oil production increases as a means to reduce transpiration.

when are you getting the cch2o. The bottom line is this, are your plants getting the proper amount of nutes, DO, and have plenty of room to grow? if the pump is big enough and the container/s are atleast 5 gallons the water will circulate properly and have enough room for the rootball to take advantage of the extremely pleasing climate to get the vigorous growth a rdwc provides. You can diy rdwc and get the exact same results as cch2o, some will argue even better because you can have much bigger containers for the root to grow into. The bigger the container the bigger the yield as long as you have the room and the lummens to match. RDWC promotes vigorous growth but in order to take full advantageof that you need 5-30g totes. as far as the uv reflective plastic goes you can simply place any kind of reflective material on top of totes and get the same results. That said some people have the money to burn, no pun, and can afford cch2o. thats great, but i wouldnt go around bashing diy guys because most are simply on a fixed budget and usually come up with pretty impressive results when its all said and done.
