Types of Vacuum Pumps & Different Questions about Purging BHO

Hey fadedawg, another question, when you do your extractions, do you put ground up flower, or do you put the whole buds, in small bits into the extraction tubes? I have about 45 grams of a mix of popcorn nugs and high quality trim in my extraction tube and have an inch and a half of space until the open end of the tube where the unbleached coffee filters attach. I'm excited because I plan on breaking my extraction virginity tomorrow!!! I have my 8x12" pyrex dish to drip my butane into, i'm going to buy a 9x13" pyrex hot water bath to go into my 8x12 to increase butane boil off. Other than that, I also heard many rumors as to the amount of butane to squirt into the extraction tube at one time. I have heard that a rule of thumb is 30 seconds on and 15 seconds off. Is this an accurate representation of what should be done? I know you cannot just keep squirting C4H10 into my extraction tube and it has to be done in an on/off fashion. I just wasn't sure if there was a constant of seconds on and seconds off. Also my last question for you is, when extracting is there a certain amount of butane (fl oz) that I should use per amount of trim/flower? Thanks again bro
I grind to 10 mesh if we're making oral meds, but loosely break up the buds if extracting for bragging rights vaporization oil.

I would suggest wadding up coffee filters and filling the empty inch and a half space, so that the material stays put.

I've heard the same rumors about starting and stopping, but we never have and still got good results.

We use a closed system now, but when we were running open tubes, we averaged about a 300 ml can per foot of 1" column. You can tell when your done, because the stream exiting the column clears and no longer feels stick when evaporated from your fingers.

We dump the tube and repack for a second extraction, if we are pushing for 100% yield.

so you pour it all out, and let it dry, then just put it back in?

I usually shake the hell out of my tube after every can just to mix things up and make sure everything gets rinsed and doesnt just find a hiding spot from the stream somehow. but I imagine you cant shake your giant, glass, mounted tubes into a clamp device like you guys got.

Yes, we pour it out and repack single pass columns.

On the larger Terpenator columns, we just flip them upside down and run again.

Wow..

Where in the hell did find a 6 cfm pump for 140$?

Amazing deal.

Do you happen to know the micron rating?..I'm looking at the yellow-jacket as a potential purchase in the future months.

price tag is a shocker though...around 500-600$.

But she has a micron rating @ 15... Which is very close to perfect vac.

Many of the ” blades” I follow and take notes from, swear by the Yellow-Jacket.

After reading the capabilities of this device, it seems like the product is worth every penny, particularly when doing massive runs.

I do agree that a perfect or absolute vacuum isn't really necessary...I've had decent results on smaller runs with a hand-vac....haha.

It's a damn workout though.

I am doing just fine with my 104$ pump from ebay. cheap chinese one. 400-500$ for a vacuum seems overkill. while those yellow jacket pumps are very nice. I think theyre overkill for what were doing.

im interested to see what others say though.

I got my yellow jacket bullet 7 cfm for 150 from a friend who does ac work and has 2 for his work
I knew they were top of the line but didn't know they normally cost that much
Hell I think I can get another so I might as well if that's the case

I'd swear behind it since it is one of the only ones I have used

You got a yellow jacket for whaaaaaa?

Bro, you gotta snag me one...lol

Holy shit, I wonder of HVAC folks get some kind of discount, as they know what WE are doing with the sale pumps dramatically increasing as of late...lol

Yea, honestly I just went on amazon and was searching and there was a package deal that included a desiccator, vacuum pump, and gauge set. The pump that came with it was a mastercool 6 cfm 75 micron vacuum pump. I ran my first BHO extraction today and the results came out pretty mixed. The overall yield wasn't what I expected. I yielded about 4 grams and lost some on one error in the extraction. There was a blow back on the coffee fliters at the bottom and there was oil stuck there. The filter ended up covered in crystallized oil. But here are before and after pictures......respectively. I hope the dabbing community enjoys this.bongsmilie BHO run 1.jpgBHO after .jpg

looking like you on the right track with this oneee. was this no heat?

75 micron sounds lowwwwwwwww(high). does the vac reach 29hg?

careful with air getting back into chamber. tis a slow process. so i like to tape my parchment/slick pad down so it dont go flying everywhere. make for a quicker process as well..

im guessing you ran 2 ounces of trim/small buds? hopefully a little less

Ha yea thanks man, the vac does reach -29 inHg. There was some heat, just not recorded. Placed polycarbonate desiccator into pyrex and continually filled with hot but not boiling water. Then I would take out the slick pad and run it on the side of the metal pot the water was heating on and it would liquefy, i would then take it and place into desiccator and purge. I learned quickly to bleed slowly, ran a purge and pulled the vacuum very quick and my pad flew, my heart dropped and sinuses cleared, was up against the side of the chamber. Quite the scare. And I ran under an 2 ounces, 41 grams of high quality trim, 6 grams of flower. Today the stuff hardened, I was at my buddies, last night, watched the hockey game.....got real fucked up (jager for jagr) got home from work, and the stuff is like a jolly rancher and bits shatter off. Very pleased with the results overall, and ready to improve whats been produced.
