Two plants, same conditions, one doing bad, the other good?

I've got 2 Darkstar plants 8 days old, both are in the same type of soil, get the same amount of water/light/everything and one is doing great with no problems. The other one is developing brown spots on the leaves and the bottom set of leaves are turning yellow, I thought it was getting burned by my lights and backed it away a bit and now it's stretched a little and has more spots .

Temps never get above 82 and usually in the mid/upper 70's, humidity goes from upper 50's low 60's when lights/fans off to mid/upper 30's when lights/fans are on. Low temps are when lights/fans are on BTW. Soil is 97 cent potting soil, which is all I could find here in town that wasn't miracle grow or was full of nutes, I was afraid to burn my seedlings with that stuff. Lights are 4 daylight 6500k CFL's in a PC case about 3 inches away from plants running 12/12, the inside of the case is painted flat white. I water every 2 to 3 days, I did not intend to grow in the case, but it's a little late to grow outside and the guerrilla grow spot I had picked out got bulldozed :wall:.

Sorry I can't post any pics, webcam is crap and I'm a little paranoid anyway.

$1 potting soil??? really? Honestly you'd be better off with some dirt outside it may have more nutes. Without any pics its gonna be hard to help identify your problem is probably why no one has responded to your thread... brown spots could be a couple things, Id say rust, maybe calcium but like I said its hard to say without any pictures.. Do u ph test your water? do u use tap water? whats the ph of your soil previous to planting? so many factors here...

I use tap water (well water) and rain water I collect, I did not test PH, they sell PH testors here but no PH+/- (I live in a small town) as for the soil, I went to every store in town and basically it came down to $1 walmart soil or something that would probably burn the hell out of my seedlings.

I just found it odd that one plant is doing terrific and the other is yellowing and spotting. I'm not too concerned, these were just some freebies I got, I'm used to growing things outside and not used to having to check for all these variables. I tried taking some pics but you couldn't really tell anything by looking at them.

Hopefully I'll have an easier go of it next year outdoors, I wouldn't think a weed would be pickier than my tomatoes, grapes and flowers.

Outside soil is much better than a $1 soil. Don't expect too much on freebies.
