Meta agrees to pay $725 million to settle lawsuit over Cambridge Analytica data leak | CNN Business

Facebook parent company Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle a longstanding class action lawsuit accusing it of allowing Cambridge Analytica and other third parties to access private user information and misleading users about its privacy practices.

The proposed settlement would end the legal battle that began four years ago, shortly after the company disclosed that the private information of as many as 87 million Facebook users was obtained by Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm that worked with the Trump campaign. The data leak sparked an intense international scandal for Facebook, drawing the scrutiny of regulators on both sides of the Atlantic.

The lawsuit involved obtaining millions of pages of documents from Facebook and other related parties and hundreds of hours of depositions, including dozens of current and former Facebook employees.

Facebook co-founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before a combined Senate Judiciary and Commerce committee hearing in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on April 10, 2018 in Washington, DC. Zuckerberg, 33, was called to testify after it was reported that 87 million Facebook users had their personal information harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm linked to the Trump campaign.
The users settling with Facebook called the agreement the “largest recovery ever achieved in a data privacy class action and the most Facebook has ever paid to resolve a private class action” in a motion to approve the settlement filed Thursday. They estimated that between 250 and 280 million people may be eligible for payments as part of the class action settlement.

The settlement is pending approval from a judge, who will hear the motion in March.

“We pursued a settlement as it’s in the best interest of our community and shareholders,” Meta spokesperson Dina Luce said in a statement. “Over the last three years we revamped our approach to privacy and implemented a comprehensive privacy program. We look forward to continuing to build services people love and trust with privacy at the forefront.”

Meta did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement. In the motion to approve the settlement, the users who brought the suit pointed to changes Facebook has made in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica breach, including restricting third-party access to user data and improving communications to users about how their data is collected and shared.

The Cambridge Analytica leak began with a psychology professor who harvested data on millions of Facebook users through an app offering a personality test, then gave it to a service promising to use vague and sophisticated techniques to influence voters during a high-stakes election where the winning presidential candidate won narrowly in several key states.

A 2020 report by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office later cast significant doubt on Cambridge Analytica’s capabilities, suggesting many of them had been exaggerated. But the improper sharing of Facebook data triggered a cascade of events that has culminated in investigations and lawsuits.

The scandal prompted a global outcry that led to hearings, an apology tour from Zuckerberg and various changes to the platform. Facebook agreed in 2019 to a $5 billion privacy settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission over the privacy breach, and to a $100 million settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission over claims that it misled investors about the risks of misuse of user data.

Speculative opinions are not facts. My opinion is people respond emotionally in support of their own confirmation bias in these types of polls.

A majority opinion cannot change a thing which is factually incorrect into a thing which is true by virtue of majority opinion.
For instance, if Hunter Biden laptop discussion WAS suppressed to aid in creating a particular outcome, facts, not opinions should prove or deny that was the case.

it's a poll...it was presented as a poll...no one said anything beyond that. based on their poll, 61% of Canadians don't like him. based on another poll, they might reverse the numbers.
we all already understand that, you don't have to tell us. although, to get the FACTS about Canadians opinion of muck, you would have to have a mandatory, universal vote...which ain't gonna happen, so read the poll story, knowing that polls are nothing more than vague, easily manipulated metrics. like every one else.

I could speculate on the odds of voting in Canada ever being a mandated thing, but I've heard Australia has some requirements in that realm, although I don't know the specifics.

I'm not a twitter person, but like the idea that Musk is revealing the bias of the past censorship. That's not a blanket endorsement of Musk by me though.

Could an intentional bias swing the other way? It could. I guess we'll see.

I never twittered, so it doesn’t matter to me. But there are limits to free speech. We’re seeing that now with the impending cases against people who chopped at the foundations of democracy while consciously knowing they were promoting lies. I hope Fox News has to pay large for their lies about the election, the voting machines, etc. Rudy is getting disbarred, as he deserves, etc.

Really importantly, beyond the far right, who really cares about Hunter Biden? He’s a scum bag, but it’s not like the president gave him a position in the White House. Do you really think the crimes of a civilian son were going to interfere with the election?

i think playing to Hunter's weaknesses actually hurts the republicans. they're pointing out that even good parents can have disappointing children, which just makes Biden more relatable to many, many people who have dealt with their own disappointing children...and he's doing it all while under the stress of being president.
Joe Biden is not my favorite person, but he's done a damn fine job as president, even before you consider that he did 99% of it with the republicans trying to fuck up everything he did, out of sheer spite.

I don't think good parents take showers with their teenage daughter. Her diary is confirmed as being legit and she clearly wrote her father would make her take showers with her. Just saying.

The diary was left behind by Biden, the daughter of President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, at a friend’s house during a rehab stint in Delray Beach, Florida. Aimee Harris, who subsequently lived in the house, discovered the diary, and with Robert Kurlander concocted a Coen brothers-level plan to sell it. Harris and Kurlander recently pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, with prosecutors confirming the diary as authentic. Kurlander, according to prosecutors, is now cooperating with an ongoing investigation, and a key question being probed is whether Project Veritas understood the diary was legally obtained (as the organization has asserted) or whether it had any role in instructing Harris and Kurlander to steal further personal items of Biden’s in order to allow it to authenticate the diary. (The question could hinge on whether Biden abandoned the items, or was “storing” them at the friend’s home, and planned to return. Prosecutors allege the items were “stored,” not abandoned.) No charges have been filed against Project Veritas or its employees.

The diary’s most newsworthy moments are suggestive but stop short of making any concrete allegations against Ashley Biden’s father. In the most-often quoted passage, she writes, “Hyper-sexualized @ a young age. What is this due to? Was I molested. I think so – I can’t remember specifics but I do remember trauma – I remember not liking the woolzacks house; I remember somewhat being sexualized with [a cousin]; I remember having sex with Friends @ a young age; showers w/my dad (probably not appropriate). Being turned on when I wasn’t supposed to be.”

According to Snopes, what you write above is not proven. Unreliable rating. This sort of sordid thing is a total distraction from actual politics. Even in the alleged excerpt, there is no explicit suggestions of age or situation. This type of stuff is just digging in the muck. The fact that people on both sides look for reasons to simply hate or be disgusted by the other party shows how much the party manipulators have won in controlling the way people think about things. Any democrat or Republican who states outright that they would never vote for the other party have been partially brain washed, just as the political dogs intended. They have you where they want you.

Not enough information to make a final decision there, but it seems reasonable there's at least a possibility keeping discussion of the Hunter laptop censored could influence a voter decison.

I'm not going to dig around and get affadavits, but I've heard some long time Democrats say if they'd known about the Hunter stuff they wouldn't have voted for Biden. Much the same way some people that were gung ho on the vaccine miracles haven't gone back for boosters now that more information is coming to light.
