US President Donald Trump says transgender people cannot serve in "any capacity" in the military.

He tweeted that he had consulted with military experts and cited "tremendous medical costs and disruption".

The Obama administration decided last year to allow transgender people to serve openly in the military.

But in June, Defence Secretary James Mattis agreed to a six-month delay in the recruitment of transgender people.

How has Mr Trump justified his decision?

As is often the case, the announcement came in a series of tweets.

Mr Trump said: "After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the

United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any

capacity in the U.S. Military.

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened

with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

But the measure will not go into effect immediately, as spokesperson Sarah Sanders told reporters

at a White House press briefing.

The implementation policy has to be worked out, she said when asked if troops on battlefields

would be immediately sent back to the United States.

This was "a military decision" said Mrs Sanders, adding that it is "not meant to be anything more than that".

Why has the president decided on this now?

The timing of this transgender ban is almost as interesting as the move itself.

Why now? With the Trump administration being buffeted by the Jeff Sessions political death watch,

the ongoing multi-prong investigation into the Trump campaign, the healthcare drama in the Senate

and the impending Russian sanctions bill, perhaps the administration decided this was a good time

to change the subject and rally conservative forces to his side.

Republicans have long used cultural issues as a wedge to divide Democrats and energise evangelicals.

As one White House insider acknowledged, this is straight out of that playbook.

While Mr Trump campaigned as sympathetic to LGBT rights,

he needs the traditional religious conservatives to stay loyal to him now, more than ever.

Or perhaps, as Politico is reporting, the White House sought to resolve an intraparty dispute that

threatened passage of a key military spending bill in the House of Representatives.

That the president chose to do so suddenly, with little advanced notice,

would not be out of the ordinary for this administration.

The president's action will create a furore among liberals and the media commentators

whose disdain for the current administration is not a new development.

This is a fight the White House will welcome.

There are roughly 1,281,900 people in the United States Military, representing roughly .37% of the population of the United States.

Roughly .6% of the population of the United States is transgender.

Since the percentage of people in the overall population is less than 1%, and les than half of 1% will ever serve in the Military, that means that this law will affect, at best, 10 to 15 people.

All of this shit over 10 to 15 people, and that is ONLY if they are open about it.

I don't know which is worse: Trump for making a big deal of it, or for other people making a big deal of it.

Anyone that wishes to mutilate their sex organs in order to live as the opposite sex is inherently mentally ill--- If their xy genes are whacked by default they lived their entire life with serious mental issues. If they want to mutilate their sex organs and their genes are healthy and defined..they have serious mental issues. There is no scenario that makes genital mutilation for sex re assignment a non mental issue as well as a physical one.
I feel for those with genes that dont match their package and would help pay for their reassignment and mental health counseling too.

'My stomach dropped': Transgender troops hit hard by Trump ban

Sergeant Kennedy Ochoa was preparing for a ceremony to mark his promotion when he heard the news.

President Trump had tweeted to say the country would no longer "accept or allow" transgender Americans

to serve in the military, citing "tremendous medical costs and disruption".

This was not the way it was supposed to go. For more than a year, transgender service members have been allowed

to serve openly, following an Obama-era policy change last June.

Announcing the change, then-defence secretary Ash Carter set a deadline of 1 July this year for the various

branches of the military to begin accepting transgender recruits.

In the meantime, many active duty members came out and won the support of their commanders and colleagues.

Sergeant Ochoa was one of those. On Wednesday morning he was proudly putting on his uniform -

the male regulation dress blues he has been allowed to wear for a year -

and preparing to graduate from a training course that puts him on track for a promotion in September.

Then he saw the president's tweets. "It was heartbreaking, my stomach dropped," he said in a phone interview.

"I had to just try and compartmentalise it so I could enjoy today."

Sergeant Ochoa is unwavering in his desire to continue serving his country. In five days he is due to re-enlist.

"Now I don't even know if I can do that," he said. "It just seems like chaos, so many unknowns."

It wasn't just service members that were caught by surprise, the timing of the announcement appeared to wrong-foot the military too.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Defense (DOD) referred all questions to the White House, saying only that new guidance would be issued soon.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment. At a news conference, President Trump's spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said

the administration would work with the DOD to iron out the details. "I would imagine the Department of Defense will be the lead on that," she said.

For some, the fallout from the president's tweets was more certain. Riley Dosh trained for four years at the West Point military academy, graduating in May this year.

Ms Dosh came out as transgender while at the academy. She was secure in her decision following the Obama-era policy change and she had the full support of her commanders.

Then, earlier this month, she was abruptly told she would not be allowed to commission as an officer alongside her peers.

Back at home in Austin, Texas, with no employment and no health insurance, she was awaiting a review of that decision.

Now it seems certain that she's headed out of the army for good.

"I was already losing hope that I could commission, now I have absolutely no reason to have any," she said. "It's a final nail in the coffin for my military career."

She would find a Plan B though, she said. The situation was worse for those already in.

"This is an absolute nightmare for my trans brothers and sisters who are serving. They now have absolutely no idea what their future is going to be."

Mr Trump's tweets may have come out of the blue but they followed a series of attacks on transgender service by Congressional Republicans.

Among them, Vicky Hartzler, Republican for Missouri, introduced an amendment to the near-$700bn armed forces funding bill - currently before congress -

which sought to bar any military funds from being used for transgender medical care.

The amendment narrowly failed, but Mr Trump's tweets echoed Ms Hartzler in citing supposedly burdensome costs of transgender medical care -

a concern which has riled Republican lawmakers.

An authoritative 2016 study by the Rand Corporation suggests the concern is unfounded.

The study estimated that transgender health care costs would increase the active duty health budget by $2.4m to $8.4m annually - just 0.04% to 0.13%.

10 times the upper estimate for transgender related costs.

coal miners had more hope before trump. they were starting to move away from the inevitable death of coal and diversify their economies. not anymore.

I still don't understand how, the people themselves from coal states bought what Trump
