Absolutely they do but that doesn't mean you can hide the buds from light...I think the tradeoff is worth it especially if you have a lot of healthy fan leaves sticking outwards
I have the same experience as Herb and Suds.
Don't know if it's cuz of degradation from the lights, or if it's a natural thing, but while the lower buds are not as dense they sure are sticky as hell.
Most times stickier than the tops.
Also, there is not enough leaf matter in a bud to photosynthesize efficiently.
You want your fans to do most of that heavy lifting.
So yes, you can trim back lower fans that don't receive much light, but IMO you don't want to trim fans that do, even if they shade out a bud somewhat.
Better off tucking.

I can see what you mean. When you say tucking your just pushing the leaves aside?
