i know this is a stupid question but is there any neg effect for trimming the fan leaves? my baby's fan leaves are huge and i would just like to get some light under them.

for you guys out there who've done this are there any neg effects? i have a 400hps growing in soil. they are about 14in tall now ready to throw on 12/12.

can i trim off 80% of the fan leaves without stressing them too much where it would put them into shock?

There are no stupid questions.

The fan leaves generate the energy for the plant. You SHOULD trim the lower branches just prior to switching to 12/12. That will focus the plant's energy to the main branchs up higher. The lower branches won't be getting much light anyway. Leave the other leaves alone unless they start blocking the light to a neighboring plant. In that case, you can clip the leaves a little, or bend the branchs to allow more light penetration.

Geez, what did the plant do to you? Here you've grown her out, and she's put out all these nice leaves, some of them huge, and she's really ready to rock and roll, and give you all of that delicious bud that you crave, and ...

What???

You want to hack her up, and stunt her til a miserable ending. :wall:

Leave the plant alone, she has responded to the light and has sprouted all these beautiful solar panels, and it's those that need the light. When the plant doesn't want them any more, they will yellow, and then you can remove them.

Do NOT cut 80% of the leaves, only cut dead or unhealthy looking leaves. I usually remove the yellowish leaves and lower branches on the plant nothing more.

OMG cutting off 80% of the leaves right before the switch?
Plants have leaves for a reason.
Can you imagine taking a nice orange tree, and just as the oranges are about to start growing.
You rip off 80% of the leaves off the tree. Think the oranges will be just fine?

Rip off the ones that are yellowing off, but try to leave them alone.
I lollipop my plants, but otherwise leave them alone.
Sometimes you can get a situation where your canopy is just too dense.
Then you might need to remove some leaves, but you should also factor that in for your next grow.
Alter the spacing for your plants next time.
