tomatos in dwc

ok so i was told by some hippie that i cant grom tomatos in dwc unless it is a cherry tomato or maybe a roma but a legend or beefsteak will fill the res up with too many roots. i have never grown a tomato and have a spare dwc set up and i really want to give it a go. any links to a tomato thread that i should read?
