Thread Hijacking

What's the policy here on thread hijacking? I've NEVER seen so much thread hijacking on ANY forum as much as I do here! It's insanely annoying to read someones grow journal only to be all of a sudden looking at pictures and descriptions of somebody else's grow! I see it even in the art section too... Does this just annoy me or others as well? I run a very large forum where this is highly looked down upon but I don't see many complain here, maybe everyone's too stoned to care or notice? :-?

We are not like other forums by nature, our members are also not average forum members, people who grow mj are generally the type who make their own way & dont like or follow alot of rules, hence the growing of mj.

We dont like jamming a bunch of hard lined rules up the members asses, its off putting .

If a member asks we will help members keep their journals 100% intact but very few ask, most who post journals appreciate the community.joining their thread & members who take the time to post pics are an added bonus.

We are the #1 mj growing site on the www because we let the community have alot of freedom, its a good place to learn & chill, pull up a chair & stay a while, you might find our approach to moderation refreshing compared to other heavy handed sites.

Welcome aboard.

I see where you are coming from but "my" site is pretty lax, I don't think deterring thread highjacking is heavy handed moderation at all and we also the #1 site for our topic at hand. It's just something that annoys me, but if I am the only one then I guess the majority rules. :)

Good point, Catchin22. What do you do to control off-topic posts on your site, and how would you propose that we change what we are doing?

Thanks

If there aren't many complaining then there's probably not much reason to do anything about it. I wasn't sure if I was the only one bothered by it. It may be because I am new and easily distracted while scrolling through, I tend to focus on pictures and dates to get an idea of progress, it's when I see somebody else's picture post I get confused unless I've made special note of who is who.

The only solution I can think of, without deterring others from sharing their progress along side others grows would be to ask that people put their picture posts in drop down / hidden menus, if you installed the appropriate VB Plugin to do that, or just post a link instead.

As far as what we do to control off-topic posts on our site, our members tend to point it out to the offending poster, which usually keeps the forum tidy. The problem is, we have an Off-Topic section and the "attitude" tends to leak into other areas of the site, it's more or less attitude control. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the nature of this entire site is laid back, so controlling posting style I can assume from section to section may be difficult.

The more I think about it the sharing of posts and pictures is more indicative of of the lifestyle of the average user here, which is cool, though personally I would prefer my own grow log or art thread not be drowned out by others posting pictures in it. Perhaps a poll would be in order to get a sense of the overall opinion here.

That said, really love the site and enjoy it very much, it's a wealth of information and from one owner to another I can appreciate the work put into it. :)

Just thinking about this, a cool mod would be something that highlights the OPs posts in his/her thread which would make scanning through them much quicker if you were only looking for OPs posts. Such as a custom CSS attribute to change the color of something in their post... Just a thought. :)

Just too put my .02 in. I am only bothered by thread jacking on the newbie, and problems threads. I think that people in need of help should get their answers. I often encourage people to start their own threads as they will get more specific attention to their issues, rather than taking focus off someone else's.

If its your own thread tell people that and they will usually not do it. If they dont notice it at first you could politely point it out and ask them to delete the thread jacking post and start their own thread. I usually will politely point out threadjacking is not looked upon nicely by everyone when i see it (after answering their questions the best i can) personally.

hey i have a question about lighting can any of you help??? ;)

jk

yeah thread hijacking sucks... but can be avoided for the most part just by suggestion on the OP's part ;)

but yeah i do see how that can be confusing to people who arent used to navigating through the halls of RIU ;)

that sounds pretty cool to have a little highlight mid thread as well almost in the same way you have the green arrow programmed in the thread title searches and it doesnt sound like too much of a programming task but its your site so its up to you ;)

but then i just look for the avatar and the name... unless they change it all of the time like some people dizzlefrost cough cough lol ;)

I also prefer to handle hijackers the same way. Answer their questions and gently suggest they start their own thread. Does not always work out that way though. Some tend to become troll like and don't even thank you for the answer. They feel they are being slapped on the wrist and out come the attitudes. Luckily, so far as I have seen RIU handles non productive squabbles very well. I myself have recently got into a heated discussion. I reported my own thread and it was deleted. So I am prepared to take the good with the bad. Over the last month I have made over 900 posts, made 30+ new friends and have been able to help a few new growers along the way. And that besides learning for myself are the reasons why RIU is my fave site. Sorry for rambling!
