its not always true that the plant is ready to harvest when the hairs turn amber colour this can happen when the plant is ready 4 water, its more to do with the trichome colour, you will need a good magnifing glass have a look at pic will explain you can determin what type of high you want too all bye the colour of the trichome hope this helps

what is the minimum level of magnification that i will be able to see the colors of the trichs? i live in a shity place and can't find anything here :D

i got a good one from a goldsmith supplier for looking at diamonds not sure what strenth but one of my kids has got a cheap plastic microscope that cost £9.99 and its perfect dont know where he put it but he will be in at 3pm will find out post on here

I got a hand held microscope from Radio Shack last weekend. It goes from 60X - 100X with a built in light. It runs on 2 AA batteries. It has two thumb wheels. One for magnification strength and one for focus. It works great and set me back less than $11.00

I hear ppl saying you need a 30x mag. Have you got a digi camera?? if u get a tripod and take a very close pic u should be able to zoom in on a pc dude, hope this is some help:joint:

no, a 6x maginifier is not enough. i had an 8x laying around and tried it and couldn't see the trichs. so i went out and got the 60X - 100X that little tommy has.
I also have the picture that theigak put up taped up in my grow room.

this is the one i use and it works fine its a cheap micro science kids toy 100x 200x and 450x magnification

man i've found the same microscope....yeah it's for kids. the one i've found says 25x - 100x - 450x .it costs $15 will it do the work?

oh yea one more thing sum buds will mature quicker than the top one so is a good idea to have a few samples top middle bottom b4 you chop ya top bud off as it may not be at same stage as rest of plant

To growers like you and I, thats the Rolls Royce of looking at trich development and color

Myself, I use a 30x jewelers loupe most of the time or a a digital camera on a small tripod, I have one of those pocket 60-100x pocket microscopes, more of toy, but it works, but having a desktop simple microscope like you have is the best option, maybe not the easiest, but still one of the best methods, although you'd probably have to take a leaf sample to put on the glass slide. :?

...But in a pinch, you cold take a pair of binoculars and look at the trichs with the rubber eyepiece towards the plant, at about a quarter inch away, you can see the trichs coloration pretty well.
