It could. I do that too, the longer I wait the longer it takes to root and the worse it looks! I've heard it's strain dependent.

I did it for kicks many years ago.
Probably have pics but ain't gonna look.
Did it at probably 9 - 11 weeks into flowering, can't remember didn't keep detailed records other than some pics.
Took lower side branches of a sativa hybrid that will root fast under normal cloning conditions.
I remember I surgically remove the buds left the branch about 8" - 10" before being put directly in soil.
No dome. A dome probably would have improved my success rate.
I think 2 or 3 out of 9 took.
One was unique.
It stayed alive for maybe I'm guessing 8 weeks (could be longer) and developed a trunk about 3 times the size it was when it started out as a clone but never developed new growth. I finally opened it up and it had some nice roots but no growth on top ever developed, the tiniest leaf and I would have kept going with it.
