but if you're beautiful then you are no longer ugly. if you're not ugly then god doesn't love you. then you're no longer beautiful.

This may only be tangentially relevant, but this reminds me a bit of the single most important quote to which I was ever subjected in the whole of my development as a person. I have passed this quote on a thousand times, and continue to do so.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -Eleanor Roosevelt, 1937.

When i was a child, my self esteem was as low as it possibly could be. I felt alienated from other children, was incessantly teased, and made to feel as if I lacked something that the other children possessed. After having been subjected to this quote, I immediately began to analyze the source of my feelings of alientation and subsequent depression; and entertain the idea that i was not playing the role of the victim, but of the enabler. I cannot overstate the importance of this quote in my development as a funtioning member of society. Even today, around 17 years later, I reflect on these few, precious words every time I feel as if anyone is trying to belittle me, however subtly.

I always treat all whom I meet with respect and regard them with courtesy; I know, however, that not everyone conducts himself in the same fashion. I will never again allow that wretched man to project his insecurities onto me, and I hope you all follow the same ethos. Cynicism is a powerful foe; in that it comes on easily under guise of release and coddles one into helpless submission to things against which he should be struggling. If you take responsibility for your own well-being, you will find that everyone else will follow your example.
