Tonight the Senate will be voting on whether or not the current marijuana bill is fit to become law.
A vote from the Senate is usually the second last step before something actually becomes law, the last one being approval from our head of state the Queen.
But this time there are a few factors that means that even if the Senate approves it legalization could still be weeks or even months away.

There are two main reasons for why this vote won’t lead directly to legalization.
The first is that the Senate has added a whole bunch of amendments to the bill it was given by the House of Commons, so if the Senate approves the bill it actually has to go back to the House of Commons where they can then vote on the amendments the Senate added.

And it seems likely that the House will reject at least a few of the amendments, leading to a stand-off between them and the Senate.
The second reason is that even if the House approves all the amendments there is currently a clause in the bill that says that marijuana will not become legal until a date which will be set by Justin Trudeau and his cabinet.

So even if the Senate, the House of Commons, and even the Govoner General, who represnts the Queen in Canada, were to approve the bill this very second cannabis would still be illegal in Canada until a date set by the Prime Minister and his cabinet.
So when will marijuana actually be legal in Canada? No one really knows right now.
