I don't really wanna spend more than $100 on the whole project if that's possible. A little over should be alright. Keep in mind I still need to buy nutrients and solve my smell problem too.

Yea start with cfl. you can always add more.$100 will just buy a cheapo depot fan n filter.....just don't buy booster fan thinking that will work, they look like a stove pipe.

I haven't messed with mg in a long long time. If I remember right it's way short on mg....mag. I would say peters, just as cheap, better balance.
I'm not noticing any problem. The Tomato fertilizer has more magnesium than the All Purpose fertilizer.

If he can get Peters, I agree I would choose that before Mg. But, if he has to mailorder it, he might prefer $6 on MiracleGro at the local Home Depot or Lowes.

What soil are you using? If it doesn't have nutrients built in, you'll need to feed. I'm growing a test with MiracleGro Tomato right now and it seems to work ok. $6 (US) for enough plant food to grow 10 large plants.
I actually need to buy soil as well... debating going with a soil-less mix instead. Which would be easier in terms of controlling nutrients? Last thing I wanna do is burn or starve them, and I also like to do a good flush a couple weeks before harvest which was easy with hydo but idk about soil

I think it's personal preference. Some people like to use Fox Farm Ocean Forest because it "carries" them through veg. To me, that seems confusing, not knowing what's available to the plant. I prefer a soil with low nutrient content and giving nutrients each watering. To me, that's less ambiguous, I'm "resetting" the plate each time (with 20% runoff, pushing out some unused, replacing with a fresh balance). No guesswork about how much food is in the soil versus what I need to add/give/supplement.

If you want a soil that should carry you all the way through, with little supplementing (maybe a "tea" here and there), @uwine99 described an organic/amended soil that doesn't require the typical 3-4 month "cooking" of organic soils. And, updated that recipe here.

You said soilless. That would be Pro-Mix HP by itself (or growing in coco, or straight perlite). I think you're supposed to use hydro nutrients with an organically inactive medium like that. (I used GH Flora 3-part). MiracleGro Tomato or Jack's Classic should be ok (but I would add dolomite to Pro-Mix HP).

What I use is in my sig. It's a very light soil. Basically, soilless with a little soil added. Seems like the best of both worlds.
