the root-ball on an outdoor plant

after i cut one of my mahoosive plants down i thought i would have a look at what was left inside the pot.......

my pot is about 2 foot wide at the top and tapered down. when i tipped the pot upside down i saw what i expected, the root system. i cut through the mass and found that the inside the soil was completely untouched. the root system had only gone around the outsides of the pot and the soil was very moist :?

now i changed pots loads of times using tiny peat pots right up to a bucket size then the big pots..............where are all the roots i have read about. couldnt find any sign of the tap root either.

i feel confident that i could have gone away for over a week and they would have been ok :blsmoke:

Smarty...

you should check some of FDD's threads.. he has looked at giant root balls extensively...

It sounds pretty normal.... especially if the center of your soil was SOGGY.... the roots need that perfect mixture of air and water.. and they seek out that condition...

were the roots spread evenly from top to botttom?

were you using perlite?

the tap root is the WHITE root that is actually a part of the stalk (i think)... it looks liek a carrot and is only MISSED.. because it is so obvious...

i didnt mean that it was soggy as in mush i meant that the pot contents were soft. i used perlite and vermiculite and polystyrene balls. to airate the soil. the center of the pot was perfect texture, its just that the roots decided to go round the outsides.

i was expecting to find a solid mas of root.

i didnt find anything resembling a carrot lol
