I have been actively reading this board for about 5 months now. I heavily read things and finally joined after about 2 months of sulking in the shadows. There has been one thing that has constantly eluded me:
What the fuck is the deal with rep?
It seems like there is no standardization for the issuing of rep, and it is a terribly flawed system. I have seen much evidence of late night "rep parties"; but there will be abuse in any system. What I really want to know is:
1) When should rep be given? How do all of you decide whether or not to issue rep? Do you rep someone for experimentation that benefits the community, or just because they said something moderately quirky and cute? I suppose answering a question coherently and correctly is a given, but when else is it appropriate.
2) Is there any way that it can be policed? I repeadetly see posts by people who are obviously new to growing (just sprouting their first plant, been a member for one month) and have 4 or 5 rep bars. Unless I missed something extremely poignant amid their barrage of gratuitous "dat lukz kul" posts in their impressive 80+ a day, I have to reserve myself to the opinion that these cats are cheating.
I have (over time) been able to surmise the level of experience of most of the regulars on this site; and I know well to whom I offer my confidence. However, the rep system is theoretically supposed to give that feeling to any casual browser. I issue rep whenever I feel that someone has either personally gone out of his/her way to assist me, or when someone offers knowledge, experience, or experimentation that benefits everyone as a community. Why do you rep?

P.S. Please respond with your rep philosophy. If I find out that that rep is largely considered a joke here, I will rapidly distribute it to all posts using proper grammar.
