yes, a winter crop but those look like ornamentals, go big, get some of the ones bred specificly for opium production.
the very first time I bought pods, I got them from a place that was importing them from the middle east.
they were dark, there were tears all over the pods and stems. I never put it together till recently. A tea made with five of those made my wife and I sick. A second steep made us sick AGAIN.
the place went out of business and I began getting them from eBay. I am certain that these were either ornamentals or bred for seed. While they worked just fine, we had to use three times as many and they never were so strong. If there were tears, they were not that glossy black tar but rather brown
the ones I recently harvested were fine but as I recounted, they didn't yield anything smokeable and they just weren't as strong as I would have hoped.
I am now a firm believer in genetics. Not so much different than pot. You can get some bag seed or you can get the high grade gear.
I imagine poppies have been being selectively bred for a couple thousand years for their opium production, they must be quite potent.
