The Mother Grow

Decided to do a grow journal, if for no other reason than to pick up some advice and to make my usual tracking a little more interactive. The goal of this grow is to produce some mother plants to use for clones. I am looking to add some new strains to my arsenal, and after a few years of growing crops from clones, I got some seeds and successfully started them. That encouraged me enough to dedicate a little more than just an experimental corner to starting from seed.

This grow starts with 15 seeds:

5 White Widow
5 Pineapple Express
5 Bubba Kush

The goal is to cull down to the best female or two of each strain to be used as mother plants.

Seeds were started on plates, inbetween wet paper towel, and covered with plastic wrap. They were placed in an incubator at 89F. All 15 seeds germinated in less than 36 hours. They were placed in peat pots containing ProMix (a mix that is mostly peat moss and perlite, intended for seed starting, but I use it as my grow medium throughout the grow) The pots were watered with plain water (Ph 6.0) with 1% bleach added (to help prevent root and stem rot). They are under flourescent (cool white) lights, under humidity domes.

Less than 24 hours after putting the germinated seeds into the pots the first seedlings sprouted (planted yesterday afternoon, woke up this morning to 5 sprouts).

That brings things up to date for now. I will be getting my camera fixed (hopefully it's a small issue and will be resolved today) and plan to post pictures once the seedlings take.

The grow sounds good but i've never heard of using bleach in the water while watering. do u add that each time or just once?

I was told about it by a really experienced grower. I used it for the first two weeks of the seedling stage on the last plants I grew from seed and it seemed to work well. I was warned that you need to be careful to only use 1%-2% though. Any more could harm the seedling.

I keep all my plants in the ProMix HP throughout their lives. I find it maintains great drainage/moisture retention, and flushes easily. Since I have only got a couple years experience, I like to use something that is easy to correct problems in. I've tried a few other types of mediums, but most seem to degrade in quality quickly compared to the ProMix. That said, I'm always open to new ideas.

BTW, I have no problem with ANYONE posting in this journal. I don't offend easily, and I always welcome advice. I'm not the type to get pissed if you tell me I'm doing something wrong (since I'm sure there's lots of things I can improve on!) so don't be shy. I'd rather eat some humble pie and improve my skills than be stubborn when someone tells me I fucked up.

A quick update. All but two of the white widows have sprouted and look good. The white widows I may have planted a little deep, so I'll give them a few more days to show themselves.

Well the two White widows never came up, but the rest are all looking great. I have one Bubba Kush that is interesting though. It came up with three seed leaves, and it's first set is also a triple. Could be interesting:

You never know. This could grow into an extra bushy plant that would produce the same amount of bud, but from a stouter plant if it has a propensity to grow extra foliage. Time will tell.

Not much to update right now. I was away for the weekend, and the seedlings got a little too dry (my own fault for not being more clear with instructions for my wife) but look like they'll pull through. Just slowed things down. Moved them into 1L pots to retain moisture longer so I can leave them for a few days without drying out.

yeah they will be ok i did the same thing, dried the soil out that much it wouldnt even absorb water at first took 2 weeks to come back around and i think the reason it came around was i transplanted it into the 4 gallon bucket with fresh moist soil

Looks like things are starting to pick up. Growth has started to increase, and I'm hoping these guys will really start to veg in another week so I can get this grow journal started. They had a rough go of it, but most of the seedlings recovered, so I'll work on getting some pics up this week.

With everything going on here (building a new grow room, a 35 plant harvest, and tons of other shit happening on my farm) I had to put this grow on the back burner. I kept them under the flourescents to keep growth slow, but I can finally concentrate on them now!

Just moved to the veg room, and under the 1000w MH lights about a day and a half ago. They are loving it and already showing their appreciation by putting on new growth. They also got their full regiment of nutes yesterday. There are about five of them that are considerably larger than the rest, but I suspect these are males. (At least in my experience the males seem to grow faster, then the ladies catch up later on.)

I have a buttload of drying and curing to do, but that's not very time consuming, and my clones for the next crop are taken and under the dome, so it will be nice to give my Mom Grow some extra attention. More updates and pics to come.

Sorry man, I've totally been neglecting this journal. I'll get some picks and a report up tomorrow. Thanks for sticking with me.
