You seem to forget the US role in arming Israel before 1968 but yeah like MellowFarmer said he was a Manchurian candidate. Most likely by Israel since Israel has a history of covert operations for example U.S.S Liberty where they attacked a US ship and attempted to blame it on Egypt. Of course if they were successful you would be talking about how evil Muslims are and look at what Egypt did to the US.
