The Left = Trifling

dude, it isn't the system that is responsible, but the use it is put to. even socialism, a system prone to abuse by its investment of economic power in the same element which controls military and legislative power, is not responsible for the atrocities that have been performed under its influence. such a fatally flawed system might be workable if its authority could be expected to behave in an ethical and enlightened manner. capitalism has the capacity to be the most egalitarian of economic systems, giving the people themselves the control over their economic destinies. even true communalism will result in the creation of ad hoc authorities, to organize and administer the community's resources, that cannot help but inhibit the liberty of the individual. placing the means of production directly into the hands of the individual frees him of the controls of both an authoritarian state and the envious mob, leaving him to fail or succeed through the demands of the market.
Good post, I agree with pretty much everything you said. I'm in complete agreement that capitalism is the best economic system we've developed, but it's not without it's flaws. It becomes dangerous when we ignore those flaws and glorify the system as flawless, like Rick did with that post I quoted. When we acknowledge the things we've screwed up on it gives us the chance to improve them.

I'll bite on this one. I consider myself independent but that doesn't really matter. The reason so many people continue to talk about Sarah Palin is because she is drawing huge crowds and helping grow the Tea Party Movement. It would be one thing if, like you said, she lost in the election and that's that. But it's not, she went home, quit her job as Governor and went into full-time campaign mode. She is angling for a leadership role in the Tea Party Movement and by-proxy the Republican party, she is out stumping for candidates in congressional races. It's not "trifling" to bring her up because, like it or not, she is becoming a huge force in conservative politics.

It's not trifling to keep bringing up the Tea Part thing either. It's an extremist movement that is using the threat (implied or spoken) of splitting the Republican party, weakening it at a time when the party can least handle it, in order to force centrist politicians to move farther to the right. It is a divisive movement that does not even try to hide that point. Moderate or reasonable conservatives have a lot to fear from that group and the Teabaggers know this and exploit it.
i am a little late on this thread but this caught my eye. well said prof.

palin is for sure to be taken seriously. and this will also be ahuge education for her to get her up to snuff on all the intricate policy details. if i were a democrat i would focus every penny i had on destroying her. and, on cue, they are :eyesmoke:bongsmilie:blsmoke:

The tea partys are nothing more than a bunch of people venting. If they should become a third party, that might be something worthy of discussion, but that has yet to be seen.

For the moment, there are probably about two dozen morons out of the thousands that attend these rallies carrying stupid signs with swastikas and the Left thinks and wants everyone else to think these couple dozen fools represent everyone there. The fact is, 99.9% of the people at the tea parties are ordinary folks who are just upset with government policy. It's just that the Left wing media only shows the but jobs and they bury all the clips of the intelligent, articulate people. Oh, and by the way, there are many cases of Liberals attending such rallies disguised as hate mongering nut jobs just to make the other protesters look bad.

Do you guys really not get this?

you vastly underestimate the tea party. these people are america. these arent a bunch of neo nazis. these are middle class folks. you know, people like your moms and dads.

ignor them at your peril :eyesmoke:

Palin cemented her reputation when she quit. She is a quitter, and now she is more or less a pundit. Who knows, she may pull an about face and try to mount a serious campaign, we'll see. I doubt it....after the deserved beating she took in the first election, I think most folks see her as a Dan Quayle of sorts....it is tough to recover from some of the phrases she uttered.

palin just stumped for mccain(a progressive)ALOT of tea party members cant stand mccain.
i like palin personally just like people like obama personally. i would not want palin to be president.
i dont see anyone at this time i think could get this country out of the jam its in . both fin. and the constitutional crisis this current regime has us in.
i dont think im alone in this opinion . that means the next president might be as bad a tyrant as the one we have now, with the same amount of power. or more than the one we have now.
because if it is a republican progressive tyrant he might have military and law enforcement support..that is something the proggies from the democrat party do not have.
its a shame people think of these clowns as democrats and republicans .they are either progressives or they support the constitution and individual freedom and liberty.

It's a shame that people can't live in the reality they live in without wishing away that reality in favor of another reality which is essentially the exact same reality.

"You want an apple or an orange?"

"Neither, you blind fool! I want a banana, or a mango!"

why is it you seem willing to do most anything but limit the power of the politicians themselves? curtailing access to government is no answer, it is there to serve all the people and eliminating a means of speaking directly to our representatives would serve only to further exacerbate the lack of transparency that has led to so much corruption. the lie of the ballot box, when coupled with the lies of the politicians themselves, is certainly no proof against the abuse of power.
I'm curious...

In a civilized society, what form of consensual choice is more honest than the ballot box?

In theory, I know about "the lie of the ballot box". In reality, I know of nothing in this world which can't be argued to be illusory. From my point of view :blsmoke:, that doesn't make it so...
