The "HAZY SUZAN" SCROG

:joint:Ladies and Genlemen, I give you the Hazy Suzan Scrog:joint:

The scrog lazy suzan grow setup:For the 600 watt plus medium size grower who has only one point of access to their grow.

I came up with this design because my room is 5X5 but only 5 feet tall. Just low enough of a ceiling that I would get crowded without a vertial light in the middle or a scrog, and just wide enough that the Scrog would be impossible to maintain in the back of the room.

I already posted this journal once, but didn't have any pictures and had a very nondescript name (think it got 24 looks before being buried 3 pages deep in a day)
So I am reposting the following under the hazy suzan grow journal.

I am also including pictures of the drying sour kush on its 5th day of drying. half of the stems are snappy. The pre cure is DELICIOUS :hump:and potent as hell.

Grow number 2 for me is now 4 days in the drying room. Anybody who has read my threads in other forums knows that I just finished my first run with soil.

Trial and error is an understatement for this run through.

4 plants in three gallon container under 600 watt hps. Orgnkid's sour kush from clone. Made my own soil mix with way too much worm castings and had terrible drainage. Before I knew what had hit me, fungus gnats had eaten my roots to the point that my plants would never get over 20" tall. Compounding the problem was heat between 85 and 95 degrees up until week 5 of flower.

I will be lucky if this harvest brings more than an ounce . Win some lose some

i did however get to find that this strain ROCKS! If you can get your mitts on it, be sure to try it out. VERY high thc %. I have looked at alot of buds under the microscope, and have yet to see quite a concentration of resin heads.

Moving on.

My setup is as follows for this time around:

5X5X5 room
6 plants.
3 chimera C4 (Shiskaberry X Cotton Candy)
3 orgnkid's Sour Kush (Sour D X OG Kush)
SCROG
600watt hps cool tube
Swamp cooler for humidity balance and temperature control
Fox Farm Ocean forest soil in 3 gallon containers
Still deciding bloom fertilizer
Considering amending with Piranha for beneficial bacteria. waiting to see if there is a cheap alternative.

The clones are in the machine and have been there for 8 days. At this point, the Sour kush is sending out a huge mass of furry white roots from the sides of the rockwool and the c4 is sending the first of its roots. Photos attached from today at day 8

My design for the Screen of green has finally been conceptualized. Don't think I have seen much like this put into full production.

What you are looking at in the computer drawn picture that looks like the revolver is a bird's eye view of my scrog layout. it is an octagonal table with casters on each point. the circle in the very middle is a microphone stand that i cut off at 3 inches.

The pipe holds the table on axis to rotate easily so that I can actually access each plant as I need to as well as move the plants under the light as needed. i am debating setting the plants slightly off axis of the light to avoid a consistent hotspot.

Anyone with the pros and cons of this, please feel free to chime in.

To make for easy watering, I am setting up a 20 gal rubbermade just outside the room with a hose fitting to attach to a hose on the table with multiple access points with caps on them. the hose will have drip lines coming out of it (1/4 inch to prevent clogs) so that I can very easily water the plants by hooking up a hose and plugging in a cord.

Included are pictures of the clones in my cloner at 8 days from cutting, the bud from my recent harvest day before I cure it, and the hazy suzan in construction

Smokin' a bowl of that sour kush you see, as I submit

Wish me luck on this one. I am really excited to see this scrog get going. Will post pictures as I build the screen into the table and as I transplant.

Yesterday marks the first day of week six since taking cuttings for this batch.

The room got bleached from the last harvest, and the light got switched out into the 250 watt mh.

More importantly, the hazy suzan is complete. SO excited to see how this works out. See pics for details. The nails on the top are the layout of the net that i am going to weave out of twine when the plants reach that height.

the 3 short tightly noded plants are sour kush
the 3 leggier plants are the c4.

My only indecisiveness right now comes around deciding which brand to use for my mycorhizal fungi, humic acid, and enzyme type stuff.

Pretty sure I am going to go with budswell for the pre flower boost

Any thoughts?

My sour kushes are such amazing little plants, but man do they take a long time to grow any height. So bushy that there is no way I could concievably keep them in the room with the C4.

I have been keeping this c4 mother for so long that I figure I might as well flower these now if it's either/ or.... especially considering that the c4s have already reached net height (12 inches above medium)

That being said.... I just tied off my net.... and have just administered my first dose of fertilizer to them.

1 gallon reverse osmosis water
1 tbs of bat guano
1 tbs of kelp meal
1 tbs of earthworm castings

bubbled overnight with an airpump
ppm read 550 and ph 6.3 after a little adjusting

after about 2 days, I noticed my daily growth average jumped from 1/2 inch to about 3/4 of an inch.

My choice has been made on humic acid/myco/beneficial bacteria, and luckily it all came in one package- soil secrets nectar/ambrosia.

Also in the mail is my 0-7-0 high p bat guano.

Will post pictures as the screen begins to fill. This is my first time filling a screen, so wish me luck. Word on the street is that timing is everything with this system.

Any words on when to administer the 0-7-0 bat guano based on how full my screen is? I figure I am about 2 days away from the next watering and about 7-12 days away from switching over to flower.

My first scrog, so any successful scroggers, advice would be appreciated

Wow, very ingenious idea man. I am in the same predicament about how to do a SCROG without being able to reach the back plants. Unfortunately my room is long and narrow so the hazy suzan wouldn't make the most of the space. I'm curious to see how full your screen will get. Did you top those beauties?

Is your watering system being pumped just by gravity or do you actually have a pump in the rubbermaid? Right now i'm using a 5 gallon pail with a hose attached to the bottom to reach my back plants, but I plan on setting up hoses going to each plant as you do. How do you manage not to tangle up the hose while spinning the hazy suzan?

What did you use to split the water from the main hose into all the smaller 1/4" tubing? Mind taking some pics?

Props man, I hope all your time pays off! I'm a rookie too and am on my 3rd round right now. Hopefully the 3rd time is a charm. I have had thrips on my plants for a few months now and they are bred from satan himself I swear. I have tried everything from pesticides to predator bugs and they're still there. I'm forced to shut everything down after this round and leave the room empty for a while to make sure EVERY one of those little buggers is gone. Fuck I hate bugs....sorry for the rant.

So since last updating, I have encountered another run in with the thrips. Sprayed tobacco juice on the 4th and on the 7th(yesterday). Hopefully one more treatment. Would just leave it to the ladybugs, but they seem to be migrating and not locally accessible... at least thats what they told me at the nursery.

Also running into the same problem I ran into last harvest. Note the first two pictures attached. Same thing that happened last time.... I corrected it in a pinch with no money for any new organic nutes by putting a 1300 ppm concentration of my old hydro nutes on it.

Not really sure what is up with the bubbly brown spots that come from yellowing leaves. I mixed in the appropriate dolomite lime in the beginning, and all of my feed water and plain water is 6.3-7.0. Don't believe it's ph

My first fertilization was tea with kelp meal, high p guano, high n guano, worm castings, humic acid, and myco inoculant.
Somewhere around 900 ppm. That was a week before flower.

My second and most recent fertilization was saturday night (9-9) and I used Kelp meal and high p guano around 750 ppm just to be sure I'm not burning.

Anybody recognize this yellowing? Please chime in.

The screen seems to be filling up nicely. This strain is quite peculiar I have to admit though. I passed it on to an outdoor growing friend who has noticed two interesting characteristics:

It has shown no signs of flowering (stigma) and it is a month into flowering cycle.... my indoor as well

It also sags like it's out of water and dry at night time even though it's well moist. perks right up in the morning.

Not too sure about this strain.... may go back to sour kush after this one.

Ended up putting the extra sour kush that I pulled over to the side to see what they would do on the outskirts. had already potted them in 3 gals.

Stargazer:

I topped three of them, and left the other and am regretting not topping the fourth one. They grow really well into the screen with multiple mains.

I have actually only used the hose hookup once. What I do to keep from tangling is keep it so there is a hookup for a hose going to the reservoir that disconnects when I am not watering. But I have to say I find it much more reasonable to just water by hand from a pitcher (especially when administering tea.)

The way I connect the 1/4 inch line to the 3/4 inch hose is to use little barbs. They don't seal well, so I am thinking there must be a better way. the barb is just a little two end connector

Kinda like this only not a reducer http://www.bghydro.com/mmBGH/Images/HPMADB34B12.jpg

I hate the thrips myself, but I have to say they don't bother me too much these days. Last grow, I hit them hard with tobacco juice... just boiling down tobacco in water and spraying it on the plants.... with gloves and a mask and goggles... shit is nasty. then about 5 days later I let lady bugs go in the room. People advertise them for aphids, but if there is nothing but thrips they will eat the fuck out of them.

Thanks for the kind words and I wish you the best.

Drumsinttown.... The tobbacco bug killing mix, is highly effective at killing every bug under the sun. It will, however, leach some nutrients out of your leaves with repeated use. Remember, when you were a kid and got stung by a bee or wasp. Some moistened tabbacco would pull the sting right out of the wound. It's not only a natural poison (nicotine), but it's also a natural astringent (like witch hazel).
.
Drop your TDS count to 700 - 800 ppm, for three days. Wash your leaves with plain water. Wait one day, foliar feed a weak high N bat guano tea (or grow fert), with one teaspoon (per gallon) of epsom salt. It should clear the problem within three days.
.
In, the past, when I hydro'd - I grew several picky strains. I found most of them went south on me, when I got above 900 ppm TDS. Why, I really could not tell you.
Any way, after your leaves are clean & revived by foliar feeding, your plants will bounce right back. By the way, I really like your setup. Allot of grow potential in a small package - Real Nice......

OSG....As usual, you Effin' ROCK. Thank you so much for the advice. I am going ahead and getting that together for sure.

Attached are pics taken tonight as the lights went on. As you can see by the underneath shot, i have been erring on the side of dryness.

The thrips are still up and running and appear to be impervious to the tobacco this time around. i gotta get online and order the ladybugs tonight, as I just found out that my local nursery doesn't carry them this time of year. Today is day 16 of flowering. Just starting to really show. First time watching this plant flower. A bit excited. Reassured by the two sour kush plants I am keeping on the outskirts. they already look beautiful. hope to hell I don't regret having gone all c4 in the middle.

Cheers!

Just posted a part of this in the organics section under making tea is easy and cheap.... Just figured I would paste it over to this for easy re reading later.

I just snapped pictures tonight. it is occurring that the yellowing is only in two of the plants. peculiar that it is only happening for two when I treat them exactly the same.

First two pics are sour kush and the rest are of the screen of green C4.

The first of the flowers.:weed:

I mixed up my tea tonight... Just in case it was a magnesium problem (reading alot about the symptoms... seems pretty consistent.... ) put about a tsp of dolomite lime into the water to start.

I then put into the two gallons of water:
2 tbsp of grandma's unsulphured robust molasses... (1st molasses)
2 tbsp of high P Bat guano 0-7-0
1 tbsp of Kelp meal .6-.5-2.5
1 tbsp of worm castings
1 tbsp of Dr. Earth bat guano 10-3-1

Stirred vigorously.... Bubbling overnight.... Plan to dilute between 900 and 1300 ppm, ph to 6.3, and administer 1 Quart per plant.

The bat guano and the worm castings were to make sure the plants aren't slightly deficient in nitrogen. I figure it couldn't hurt to put a small amount. Any thoughts on how to maybe better this tea would be greatly appreciated.

Today is day 22... the first day of week 4 in flowering. The mid point of week 13 since cloning.

Started the evening reading the making tea is EZ and cheap thread. Noticed that some recipes call for as much as 2 tbsp/gal of 0-7-0 for flowering.

I had already made my tea in the above mentioned post, so I decided to top dress with a tsp per plant of the 0-7-0 just in case i'm staring down a phos. deficiency. In case of a mag/cal deficiency I mixed in 10 ml/gal of technaflora's magi-cal. 10 ml/gal is the deficiency treatment dose where as 5/gal is standard feeding.

I mixed in my soil secrets ambrosia and nectar each at 1 oz per gallon. The label reads to mix 3 oz of each per gallon to treat 8-12 plants in 5 gal containers. I figured that 1 oz per gallon would be just about right to treat 6 3gal containers.

This put my ppm at 1345 and my ph at 8. I adjusted ph to 6.3 and cut the solution to around 1145 by adding two quarts of fresh water to the 2 gals of tea. On the somewhat deficient plants I added an extra half quart of tea, standardly administering just one quart.

Attached are some photos I took after smoking a nice sour diesel joint.:-P

The sour kush is definitely a winner in my book. It is the plants that are growing outside the screen by themselves. Still excited to see what this c4 has in it though.

Drumsinttown... Your grow is looking great. I noticed your ladybugs hard at work, defending the bud - killing what ever little pests dare to step onto their leaf. I absolutely love Ladybugs - Nature's Best - Tiny Pest Killing Machines. No thrip or spider mite has a chance against them. OG Bud is Best ! I'm currently so stoned, I believe I just saw one of those Ladybugs wave at me...... LOL .....

Today is September 24, Day 27 of flowering.
:wall::wall::wall:
I am reaching my wit's end with the yellowing. i have treated every plant identically. the sour kush could not be happier. Two of the C4 plants are losing leaves at an alarming rate, and the other two now appear to be catching up to them in terms of yellowing and leaf loss.

in the pictures attached, one you will notice is the GIANT PILE OF LEAVES I pulled off last night. Can't tell if my plants are stunted to be 27 days in. They appear to be growing, but not at the rate I would hope.

I have read all of the books. i have read all of the FAQ's. I don't know what the fuck this is. i have compensated for magnesium, calcum, manganese Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium.

My water ph is typically 6.3 and sometimes as high as 7.

Maybe My ph meter is out of calibration.

I DONT FUCKING KNOW.... Anybody who has any thoughts, please pipe in now.... :wall:

Drumsinttown.... If the temps where you are at, have been dropping below 58 degrees each night, the soil in your pots can cool down quickly. This will trigger the plants to believe, winter is almost here.
.
They start a dump & run thing, as part of a survival mechanism. Drawing energy from all the non-esential parts (in it's opinion), and pumping it into buds. Some plants are more affected by temps than others. Last week, we got below 55 degrees one night and bam - I had a dozen Skunk / Haze crosses - yellowing leaves like crazy. Lower temps will totally F up plants like Haze or Thai.
.
If after lights out, you could put a cheap space blanket (aka - survival blanket) over them to retain some heat. This will slow this down the dash for the finish line. Walmart has them for around $ 3.50 I can't do that, since my patches are all outdoors and would draw too much attention.
.
Hope this helps.....

Damnit do I wish that was the problem....

I actually turn my lights off during the day and on at night. the coldest I see is 70 during the day... At night it is 80-82

Just to repost this from the problems thread....

hmmm....

possible it is rootbound.....

BUT I just checked out my meter. it has been reading the R/O water we get in our 5 gal jugs from the guy down the street at 5.8 to 6.0 since we started growing in this area.... Recently my girlfriend started commenting on how the water is around 7.

I checked out the water tonight... It read 8.3.

Calibrated my hanna grocheck combo and found that my ph 4 probe has been reading way low. Which doesn't make much sense, because I corrected it and found it reading my R.O. Water at 5.8 dead on.

Which means the past two teas I have made were off the charts acidic. I was getting a reading of 8.3 on my tea and correcting down to what I thought was 6.3.

Should i be administering dolomite lime with watering? Should I check my runoff water before I make any decisions for treatment? Perhaps a foiliar spray in the meantime?
