When I came west one of the first famous strains I came across in clone form was Romulan. I had grown Vic High's Romberry years before and remembered its very unique oily taste. My Friend Jem777 has good friends in Eugene that have been growing this particular cutting for over a decade in greenhouses. Everytime Jem would visit he would have leave me some Romulan flowers and the smell was just incredible. He brought me a cutting one day and I ran her in super soil and she produced amazingly sweet flowers. For quite some time it was my favorite smoke the high is good and strong somewhat a mix of body and mind and the flavor was just amazing. The old clone however is tired and really hard to root she kinda cycles between good and great harvest so I thought some hybrid vigor might be just what the doctor ordered. We produced a hybrid using the Romulan and our prize male Space Queen knowing that Vic High originally used Romulan and Cindy99 to create Space Queen. It was almost a back cross thanks to the parent selection having Romulan on both sides and a little Cindy never hurt the taste.
I put this new hybrid into the testing procedure passing them out to card holding caregivers who have exhibited exceptional skills in the garden. One of these exceptional growers is a long time friend of TGA and also the same person we acquired the Romulan cut from in the first place so I could think of no better person than Jem777 to give us feedback on the Romulan progeny. He has a close relationship with the mother plant and is very familiar with her smell, taste and high. Jem grew out 10 seeds and was rewarded with 6 nice females which he took clones of and numbered. I was traveling so I was not able to record him budding out each female in his grow tent. When I slowed down we had a sit down and he brought me a nice sample of each phenotype and we had a session that took up the better part of a day.
Here are my smoking note direct from those sessions
Taste the Rainbow ..The Flav Session news.
I have some really exciting news!
I got really high off of The Flav.
Its rare I get actually blazed on smoking anything. After 35 years of continuous toking it more than anything calms my nerves and makes me smile. The only way I get really high is eating several cookies. Consuming 3 tablspoons of Tincture OR smoking a new THC profile. The latter is more rare as my THC receptors are probably maxed out still from the Bicentennial when we did 1776 Bong hits as a teen.
HOWEVER Jem777 came over to show me all the Flav phenos he grew out from seeds and we sat down for a serious session with MzJill and Dioxide so we would have as many opinions on the taste and potency as possible.
We got completely hammered using the Volcano and a few bingers.
We were all laughing and smiling and Jem77 had to head outside and grab his guitar.
We spend the next few hours listening to him play Pink Floyd and Yes and even Waterfall by Hendrix the dude shreds thats all there is to it. Some one needs to record this cat asap!!
So were all just ripped singing along or humming cause we so high we forget the wordsJ
The Flav is really great reefer and the best Pheno I liked #5 is the spitting image of the Romulan Mom. We took turns smelling my 30 days cured Rom and the uncured but Dry Flav and we all thought the Flav had a more complex smell but Very similar to the Momma.
So its now 10 am on Sunday and I am getting ready to wake and bake using the Vap and some Flav5
Ok staging light went off lets make a Valoon
WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Crinkle Crinkle Crinkle.
The bag gets a erect
45 second inhale Hold ..
Its so smooth its amazing and even though its similar to the Rom I been vaping all week it has a deeper richer flavor and a instant head rush.
I taste a bouquet of floral oils and spices with a hint of Pine on the exhale.
The buzz is very fast and is coming on rapidly even though I have only had 1 Valoon,
Lets try a second J
I must say the damn weed is good. The quality of the buds are as good as anything I have grown so yeah Jem777 nailed it. If I didnt know better Id think I grew this reefer.
In the end I agreed that his #5 female was my favorite and he surprised me by already having a clone with him for my garden. I was excited to run her in Super Soil and see what I could do with her. I transplanted the little clone into a 1 gallon pot for a few weeks and placed under a 400watt metal halide. After 3 weeks I transplanted them into 7 gallon pots using about 40% Super Soil and the rest base soil. After another 3 weeks there root base had been established and the plant stood about 40" off the floor. I wasn't sure about the stretch so I went ahead and placed her into the budding chamber which was powered by 2000 watts of HPS lighting and co2 injection. I was happy to see the plant did not stretch very much and by day 21 of flowering she just under 5 feet which is just about perfect. I noticed that she had more vigor and seemed generally happy and healthier than the mother plant. Taking clones just before I budded the clone I had roots on the duplicate copy in less than nine days.
By week 6 Flav #5 as Jem named her started to take on the thick oily Dank smell we know as Romulan but seemed to carry more of a sour smell and a thick coating of resin. I fed her only water and sugars at day 30 and 45 specifically Sweatleaf and Sucanat. The sugar coated flowers on the budding plant continued to swell up to week eight when she slowed down and at day 61 I saw Pepsi colored resin heads on about 35% of the plant and I took her down. After drying and curing the flowers took on a Rainbow of flavors and smells to this day I have a hard time describing this particular strain. There is such a wide range of terpenes starting with Grapes and Anise as well as a thick oily earthy has smell. As the buds cure longer they take on even more exotic smells and remind me of spice and dates and it always reminds me of the book Dune. This is what determined the name of the strain in the end it literally coats your mouth with flavor. The Flav is often over looked on the TGA menu because it has a silly name but make no mistake it is serious medicine and is great for pain during the day. She has a calming effect as well as being slightly analgesic we have many patients that use it for back pain. In 2008 The Flav made the High Times Top ten strains of the year list and remains a front line strain in our efforts to ease the pain of patients everywhere.

I've got a pheno of the flav that i think smells like rainbow sherbert, but my friend thinks it smells like nerds. I gave a nug to you at the cup last week that my friend grew in hydro and you said "nice, spot on!" Heres mine at day 23 12/12 in super soil. They are healthy looking and so frosty already I can't wait to see what they look like in another month! With that being said, I had a couple runs with my super soil that didn't go too well. My plants all burned pretty badly and got really stunted. Some even hermed out on me too. I ran it about three times and got sub-par results as opposed to what I was seeing online. The first run was blue dream, second run was chem t, and the last run was this flav's older sisters. They all had different runs of super soil because I only mix enough to do about one or two runs. I also wasn't sure that it was the super soil because I had a few environmental problems with my rooms when we had to change some things with our setup. I have moved to a different place and my setup is pretty dialed now. The last run with the flav I had made a half batch of super soil to last a while, but it still burned really badly. I eventually decided to cut the super soil with some light seedling mix to see if that would dilute it a bit. When I was mixing the super soil with the lighter soil, I noticed how heavy and dense the super soil was compared to the light mix, or even roots by itself. What I realized is that I only used roots as my base soil when mixing the last batches, which obviously made my soil hot as fuck and super heavy. My new cut mix is super fluffy and holds water for 3 days solid in my NC5 tall pots compared to 5-8 days solid with my last runs, which I thought something was off having to wait that long to water. So now I know to use half roots half light soil, because these plants are fucking amazing right now! Also, I got a nice nug of your vortex from one of the guys at your booth after he saw you walk away with the nug of flav I showed you- that shit was bomb!
Nice report Sub! this ones been on my list of tga strains to try esp. for my back pain.. Can't wait see what other strains you come up with and that are in the works. Keep up all the great work there
