Didn't get an answer on the last question but I'll try again. I'm gonna be putting A LOT of cfm's through this thing. Is that gonna be a problem? From around 620 cfm's up to around 1200 cfm's. I'm guessing nobody has an answer to this. But thanks for reading.

Yes that would be a problem. The filter is too small. The fan would suck the air through it way too fast for the carbon to work.
I made this thing perfectly and couldnt get it to work with a 80, 140, or 420 cfm. The filter just doesnt seem to work. Some people have had better results than me though.

Skoad - Ya I was thinking his exhaust fan was kinda small. I really don't know how I'm gonna do this. What if I did this:

My exhaust flows out onto my porch. What if I put a big ass rubermaid box in front of the hole and filled it with active carbon. Cut holes for air to enter and leave. I think I might try this. Someone tell me not to before it's too late if I shouldn't.

This carbon filter link was provided to me by another member and i think it is quite excellent, simple, effective and cheap. my problem is that i am doing a closet grow in a rental apt and i am concerned about that sweet aroma being shared with the whole complex ( hawaiian air just carries scent for sooooo long). in my room i have one oscilating fan, so what do you think about me just putting in another small fan in the room with said filter attached? would that eliminate some (or all) of the smell? I would like to be able to create an intake/exhaust system but putting holes in my place just isnt feasable.

thanks!

I found carbon but in bigger chunks. Do you think I should mash them up a little?[/QUOTE]

You can crush the carbon without affecting its functionality. However, you will get a lot of dust that can clog a filter. Just shake off the dust using a screen of some sort or just swish it around in some water and pour off the water. When the water runs clear, your carbon is clean.

Also don't crush it too small or it will restrict your airflow.

Very nice filter Zen, thanks for posting.

The cups I got have rubber padding completely covering the bottom. Is there no need to punch holes through the bottom of the cups?

Thanks!

My walmart only has one size :/ so im going to try an office store to see if they have something different and if not ill attach this pen holder i have to a cricket holder. similar to what op has except big enough to hold the whole jar of carbon. Hope the carbon lasts long if i have to do that.

I ran into the same thing so I started looking around for other materials. I believe this is the simplest filter I've seen. It fills the whole vent hole and seems to be great so far.

I made a one of these DIY carbon filters a long time ago...I never made a thread but showed a couple people.....I use less materials than the one built here...this one looks nicer than mine but mine is cheaper......I bought some activated carbon and cheap panty hose($1 or $2) from wal-mart as well ....but I just used the container it came in poked a whole bunch a wholes in the lid cut the circular part on the bottom, wrapped with panty hose, tied it ,overlapped the panties a couple times and used aluminum tape, any tape will do...works great for small grow ops and cheap as hell..and you can fit 4 inch ducting on it....and the rope is just for hanging purpose
