The Beginner Shroom Picking Thread (come add some knowledge)

So basically I think it would be a good idea to have a thread
essentially explaining the basic foundation of wild mushroom
picking.

Im sure i don't need to stress this to some of you but eating
the wrong type of fungi can lead to a variety of health problems
and not unusually death. These deaths are what cause psilocybin mushrooms
to remain prohibited.

I myself am also a beginner to mushroom picking s im going to refrain from adding to much specific infomation.

I've read When looking for shrooms the gills should stain blue, what would be a good method for identifying this blueness and what shade are we talking?

After picking mushrooms which is the best way to keep them from decaying?

so what are the basic identifiers of a psilocybin mushroom? :) :)

spore print how you know what kind it is cut dont pull you`ll destroy the root system & your next yield otherwise freeze drying the very best way to keep from decay If thats not a option use air & not heat

Can you elaborate on spore print? would you cu from the bottom of the stem or another place?

First step would be to find out which psychoactive species are known to grow in your geographical area. A google search can narrow it down. Most of the hits will probably come from shroomery and/or mycotopia anyway.

Sorry if i came across as having an attitude, Mushroom picking is limited in my area so this thread is more for other people so they dont die!

I like the people here and like acid more than shrooms so that's why i posted here

TBH kieranttt, unless you live near a farm/farmlands with grazing animals, your chance of just stumbling upon some mush is pretty slim..the cons (time looking for good ones and actually identifing them as psychoactive) outweigh the pros when it comes to picking vs. growing your own. You grow your own and you can easily yeild a pound with 2 syringes of spores; more than enough to make your money back on the equipment/supplies, if you know what i mean ;-)

There are known spots around that me and others have picked from i was just hoping this thread could be like a resource for someone to look at when considering picking.

Although a grow is definitely on the cards!!

Its not safe to pick mushrooms with out an experinced picker with you, period. it only takes one or two picking trips with an experinced picker to learn your local fungi. after all theres only a few your looking for the rest dont matter.

your second option is trying to decide for yourself, could be very dangerous even fatal. some of these rules may apply, but not all of them all of the time.

Blueing.
Blueing is the blueish/purplish/greenish, hue that a correct mushrooms bruises when picked. if you snap the stem in a less than a minute you should know if its active.
exception to the rule, there are a few other species of non edible mushrooms that bruise blue.. thats why this rule is only the first.
there is also another fungi that is hallucinogenic and bruises blue but doesn't look much like your average mushroom.
welsh something or other..

gills. it must have gills. they could be from white to purple depending on maturity.
exception.. a few rust colored gill mutants exist. belive they are austrailan in origin.

spore print.
after seeing if it has gills and bruises, next step to be sure is to take a spore print. your print should be dark purple.
exception. there are mutant breeds (normally only found on spore sites) that have rust/red colored spores.. think i may have seen white or clearish also. doubt you'll find those in the wild though.
also some species dont open the're caps fully, and dont drop spores... i've never found any of these in nature but have grown some at home.

best safest way is to grow your own. pf tek and some spores is the cheapest fastest way to getting off safely.

just FYI it's easier, and safer to grow them your self, you might spend some money but it'll be worth it and you can keep growing them with your first batch, picking them up is very dangerous since there are very similar mushrooms that look exaclty the same, a friend of mine died bc some told him to pick up mushrooms and told himt to pick the ones with a white line arround it and he did he died bc the person who told him, didn't know and he was to pick up the ones without the white line...plus if you grow them your self you won't have to wait ti'll it rains.
my initial expenses where.
6 half pint jars (good will)$12
for small heater (walmart)$15
4 gallon tupperware (could be smaller (walmart)$10
thermometer and humidifier average quality (walmart)$16
spores (sporebank.com)$25ish
2 gallons perlite (walmart)$4
3 gallons vermiculite.(walmart)$13
brown rice flower(walmart)$10ish
empty agar plate (optional) (ebay)$6
potato succroce (optional for futher expansion) (online)$20ish
--water
constant income of shrooms...Priceless :blsmoke:
Total:$131
the expenses after that should not go over $10 and $20 and don't run out of vermiculite, brown rice, and if you're using agar plates. if not it should not go over $30-40 it takes about 1 moth to grow and if you time it right you shoul have a constant growth.
