Hi there,

ATTN: reporter Kyle Jaeger recently went to Maine, one of the states hit hardest by America's heroin epidemic, to interview drug users who are using medical marijuana to fight their addiction. For some people, this might sound counterintuitive: using one federally illegal substance to wean yourself off another. But scientific and anecdotal evidence suggests that marijuana is an effective substitute for prescription painkillers. An anti-gateway drug, marijuana is also significantly less toxic and less addictive than opioids such as heroin.

You canwatch the incredible testimony that former addict Joshua Thornton gave to ATTN: here.

What makes Joshua's story even more relevant was the DEA's refusal this week to reclassify marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act. Instead, it will remain a Schedule I drug, alongside crack cocaine and meth, a category reserved for drugs that are strictly regulated and considered to have virtually no accepted medical value. Read more about the DEA's new policyhere.
