Are high speed trains energy efficient?

I think Ford has some insight in what will end up working.

Maybe it is time to stop thinking that cars are going to be the way.

What would be the ultimate transportation system for everyone to use (region dependent) and start thinking about one big multi part system like we did with hi ways as a nation.

I think 3d printing when it can be produced on a local level for almost anything we need non-food related, we will be able to cut out a lot of driving.

I kind of think anyone making a car today is kind of lazy.

And yes, Ford was a big nazi. And might single handedly be the biggest contributor to the mess we find ourselves in now.

God this gets me thinking about all the shit the big 3 did to stop rail. Maybe that is what we should really be thinking about and stick to driving less if at all.

As a teenager and into my early 20's I worked at the big 3. McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy's. I was a Burger King Assistant Manager for a couple years. I ate my share of fast food. But for the last 20 years I can count the times i've eaten it on both hands. What the hell are they doing to the meat? Last time I ate was a few years back, we were on the road, I was starving, drive thru was the only option. Dam McDonalds made me feel ill. Then it was a few days before that sickening taste was gone from my mouth. And it seemed like some smell was seeping out of my skin. It was gross. I'll never eat that crap again. Now I know why some people have stinky body odor. It's from eating crap food.
You are in good company.

I can already get most anything including food delivered with many items being same day delivery. I do most of my shopping online except for food which I prefer to get myself. But every grocery store in the Portland area has same day delivery. It might not be that way all across the country but cities like Portland have been early adopters. Amazon has several huge warehouses in the area. Order before noon and get it by 8:00 pm that same day for many items. If not same day then next day maybe 2 at the most.

Before Covid I used to ride the lightrail

Henry Ford was a pig. He was a racist nazi sympathizer. It disgusts me how he is portrayed as some great man. His contribution with bringing affordable automobiles to the masses and his contribution to production line manufacturing are both great accomplishments but it doesn't change the fact that he was a racist, nazi, scumbag.

lol, it is funny, as a kid it seemed like every year or two we would have a field trip to Henry Ford museum.

Looking back, I also can imagine how Ford was also maybe the most likely to have thought up using a highway system (using federal money) to initiate the post-WW2 white flight and militarization of the urban areas of our nation, as he invited all the (then) recently forcibly evicted/genocide of black people.

Maybe some kind of individual pod travel system that locks in at high speeds over large distances. idk, I have watched too many sic fi movies and not learned enough engineering/physics.

Most of Europe seems to have a decent rail system. Japan's rail system is modern and reliable moving millions of people daily. Our elected officials have been in the pockets of big oil and the automakers for so long and have been doing everything they can to make sure that America is reliant on big oil and single occupancy vehicles. Mass transportation doesn't line the pockets of greedy jerks. Americans apparently don't have any problem sitting in traffic for hours each day to get to and from work.

America is too tied to profits for a few than a reliable mass transportation system for the masses.

It is so nice to not have to share air with others we have found out for many reasons.

I personally would hate being in a crowded area like that ever again.

Pre-Covid I used to take the Light Rail from time to time. Some of these people are pretty disgusting. They go out in public all filthy, haven't even washed their face or brushed their teeth. And then there is the ignorance you get to witness. Just fools talking loud about their babies daddy while wearing slippers and pajamas on their way to the welfare office because not one of the 3 fathers for some tramps kids is paying a dime to support the snot nosed filthy brats some welfare queen is dragging around.

I'm serious. I've gotten off the Light Rail and called an Uber because I couldn't take listening to these uneducated losers bitching about this and that. Sagging pants, hoodies, grimy ball cap, dingy t-shirt, etc... talking about being broke and stinking up the train. Go get a damn job.

Sorry I got off track. But damn. What the hell is wrong with some people? Do they think their behaviour and appearance is going to lead to success?

This got me thinking, what would it take for me to embrace public transport?

I used to live in the SF Bay Area, a heartbreaking geography for anything based on rail.

For me to accept public transport as a competitor, it must do three difficult things.
1) Make it so I can go "anywhere to anywhere" in the region, including tucked-away canyon hamlets, in under 60 minutes, with less than half a mile walking.

2) Be safe, pleasant and QUIET. I do not want to hear someone else's music or conversation.

3) Be the value choice. I should be able to travel daily for less cost than operating my eight-year-old Honda that gets 50 mpg and hasn't needed much service at all.

From a design perspective I have no idea how to fit all that into the fractured landscape of the area from Gilroy to Petaluma to San Gregorio to Vacaville.

But the standard is simple. Public transport must appeal to me more than my economy car where I get to listen to my weird music on demand.

Sorry, I am not going to troll you, but it is pretty messed up what you said man.

There are millions of reasons that people end up where they do in life, and looking at people and not realizing that half the time people run around in their cars that they are looking the same and talking the same as they are dropping off so and so, or whatever in their suburban white flight neighborhoods with all those nice tax payer roads. You might not notice because those people are in a car and not having to use public transportation to get everywhere.

It's ok when it is some white guys wife running around in her SUV though bitching about having to drop some snot nosed kid off at soccer practice churning out all that pollution that everyone else has to pay for down the line.

You can still listen to weird music while riding a bus.

I lived in Silicon Valley for a few years after college and that place was a nightmare for commuting. I lived only seven miles from work. It took a half an hour by car to get there and an hour and a half if I took the local bus. I could get there faster if I rode my bicycle but the traffic made that choice dangerous.

I chose to have a ton of steel around me when I went to and from work. But I was mighty offended that I couldn't safely ride my bike or take a bus with a reasonable arrival time. A lot of things will have to change if we are to get to zero emissions.

Convoying involves using a lead car to provide guidance to following vehicles that can employ autonomous features to drive in close proximity, almost like unattached rail cars on a road instead of a track
Musk said that Tesla has the ability to do this convoying and drive 10 times safer than a human driver can today, using its existing tech. Again, a lot will depend on regular comfort levels with this in terms of making it possible for use on roads, but it’s a big potential selling point if that’s the way lawmaking trends.

Yeah I have no doubt that Musk is having his scientists hovering up every patent that they can dream up.

I really look forward to seeing as much of the future as I get to. I think it is going to be some great things we do once we shake off the roadblocks that we put in front of us in the name of progress as seen by one very specific demographic.

The rail system in Europe/Japan is amazing but the population density compared to the States is way more conductive to rail travel due to density and cost of driving a car. I would love to have light rail to commute in the the city. Hell I would love to have even a bus route here. It would be nice to have a nap while going to town lol. Maybe that will be possible soon with the Tesla lol.

I get it, and know many people that feel the same. It is an easy position to take when you are already hating life having to take public transportation and being overwhelmed by what it actually is in reality.

It is easy to point at other people and put the entirety of the negative experience on 'them', even if they don't realize it.

In his defense, he is not wrong about the idiotic conversations one overhears while riding on Portland's light rail system.

“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right”. Another Henry Ford quote that could apply here as well.

He had good quotes. Too bad he was a Nazi.

My wife is younger than me and we have to wait about 15 years for her to retire. We plan to sell the house, sell the cars and move to Toronto.

You can get anywhere in Toronto with public transit. Can’t wait to get rid of the car.

When I lived there it was the same as fog. Took me 3 hours to get to work by transit and 30 min by my Rabbit GT and so much more fun lol. I’m sure that has changed due to it now being the busiest highway system in North America. Why in the hell would anyone want to live there ....... :(. I don’t even like to visit for a couple of days lol.
