Not sure what you mean "water bath". If you mean the cooling water that cools the condenser, no copper would have no effect. I have pure copper mesh stuffed in the condenser column.

It condenses the vapor and then it drops down in the copper to collect.
from what i've seen they (tv show distillers) put the coiled copper tubing into what they call a 'thumper" to help cool down the condensate faster. like i said, all i know is what iv'e seen on a tv show so take that with a grain of salt.
96%=192 proof; but that took a long long time, you have to set it up for reflux and hit a steady state; all the while I'm burning propane. I can hit 91% routinely without the long time refluxing for the extra 5%
Thats what all the jars are for, I separate the various fractions; let them sit over night, combine what I want to keep, and either toss or save to redistill them with other batches.
