Taming the beast - Pics incl.

Good day everyone : ) im running a 6" centrifugal inline fan but the thing is way too loud considering my 3x3 is in my room & im running it on the lowest level with my speed controller that came with the fan, i have put the beast inside a box but i am thinking of getting some sound proofing material to add into the box maybe with a layer on the outside too.

seeing as my exhaust duct is going to be about 2 ft +- do you think i would need to add a silencer seeing as the sound could just travel through the ducting ?

I have some camping mat, which is a type of foam, anybody maybe know how well this could work ? Peace

Heating insulation (pink stuff) dampens Some noises, maybe worth a try?

Hey Dux, thanx man, i was checking out some places to order some of the pink stuff, they got pre cut small rolls, so any insulation would do a pretty good job ? if i go for professional sound proof im going to pay a shit load probably, looking at doing it pretty cheap, so i was thinking of just wrapping the insulation over my existing flexible ducting and then adding some more insulation inside of the cardboard fan box and then covering the box with the reflective sheeting.

One last thought, if i want to make a diy silencer would drilling holes in my flexible ducting wrapped with insulation be effective enough ? Thank you man

Put alot rugs and items in room will help to eat up some noise

Thanks bro, so do you guys rate if i insulate the ducting it will act as a silencer in a way ? or will i still hear the rushing sound at the exhaust ? Peace

Use insulated ducting and wrap your fans with insulation. If you go to buy another fan look into an axial fan, they are really quiet. I can't hardly hear mine running with the insulation over them. I'll try to get a pic up.

Greetings Cannis, im going to be insulating the ducting myself bro thats cool right ? at the moment im budgeting so i dont have any cash for a axial fan now man, i have 2 x 90cfm 12vdc fans sitting aside though. I have looked at ebmpapst at a stage but when i bought this equipment 2 + years ago i didnt think of improvising like you have unfortunately, ebm definitely sells some cool ass fans though man, u must be loving that one ? Home Depot has 25ft of 6 in. insulated ducting for less than $25. I have a Hurricane 6in fan, not known necessarily for its quiet but hooked up to PVC piping as opposed to the flexible crap and it purrs.

r2 insulation sound proof and fire proof i have been using it for years and about 2 years ago saved my life as i had a fire in my grow room and if that shit wasent in were the fire started i wouldent be typing this today so i SWEAR BY IT

So this is a picture of one of the axial fans I have cooling two hoods, I have 3 of these cooling 2 hoods each.

Hey man, like i asked already, instead of going and spending 25 dollars on insulated ducting & dollars for solid PVC pipe ill ask again lol, cant i just WRAP my existing flexible ducts with insulation ?

Sure you can, unfortunately its about the same price from Home Depot as the above. I also see you only need to cover a short distance....you can get a roll of the pink stuff for less than $10. Actually if you go down to the big box hardware stores many have opened packages with one problem or another they they may be willing to give you for pennies on the doller. Much of the fan noise in ducting IS the friction caused by the ribbing. PVC does not have this problem sounds like you don't need much, but suit yourself. Good Luck.

Thanks bro, sorry for the questions didnt wake up in the best mood because this grow is taking so f'ing long to get going : /

im trying to avoid buying the wrong stuff for my situation, there's a place selling cheap duct wrapping insulation that i could wrap the fan with and the ducting, im also thinking of making a DIY silencer for the exhaust air.

Only problem is that i read alot and then get totally confused on the best options for the situation.

All in all i just want to wrap the fan with insulation and the ducting close to the fan, then i want to make a DIY silencer with the insulation wrapping around it, i could use your PVC method for that, drill holes into it and wrap it with insulation.

Also trying to find out if i should use rockwool or glasswool.

They also make a duct sleeve that you can slide over your existing ducting. Home Depot has it, I've used it, they should have 6" and 8", comes in 5' lengths.

Hey Cannis, unfortunately no home depo in my country bro, i can get that glasswool felt wrapping i pasted on top the 2nd picture, comes with a self adhesive & maybe wont look the prettiest but it should definitely work i hope.
