Take a chance with bag seed? Or trust the seed sellers?

I couldn’t resist.. got some fire from a sack of gg4.. she had that chocolate taste.. found a seed.. I said why not...I really don’t know if it was a hermie or if a male was around.. I do know they are known to hermie.. I’m not calling this a gg4.. but I guess a pheno.. any how I took clones just Incase I like her... It’s a sativa leaner.. day 19 of flower.. don’t see any balls yet but I can say she been a tad stressed.. so who knows.. got some bad yellowing near the bottom... sorta frosty but small buds tho.. I gotta figure this plant out..EFBA0610-A230-4F49-9351-4EA8EAFEB5C3.jpeg78F53972-C6C2-4342-968D-18174C97C026.jpegEE76FC5D-C7CC-41D2-9EDB-2D64F96DF5F3.jpeg

I grew this from bagseed this past year. Came from a dispensary labeled as Blue Widow. I bought 1/2 oz and found 1 seed. It started throwing "nanners" about week 4 of 12/12. Every bud popped nanners right on top like Alfalfa from the little rascals. I harvested about 6-7 oz from that one plant and not one seed.

These pics are from the day of the chop at 76 days of 12/12.

The 3rd pic is a macro of one of the nanners. You can really see how they got that name.

Sorry I should've phrased that a bit better lol, I mean that bag seeds are more likely to carry hermie genes even if the current generation doesn't hermie on ya. But it doesn't mean that the bud will be any less potent or yield be any less. If grown in good conditions, you should be able to grow one without it hermie'ing at all. :)
True; you can grow killer bud from bag seed but it’s not easy to stay consistent this way. I used to get herms from bag seed that wreaked havoc on the yield so had to do something. Honestly one of the best moves I ever made was to order breeder stock seed. No fems or autos only regular photo period seed from a reputed breeder. Get a couple ten packs of proven genetics...TGA comes to mind; RIP subcool...and grow those out. Select a boy and cross with a few select girls. First harvest will suck but you’ll have killer genetics for life. I’ve got a thousand beans to choose from a few different crosses. Not a single herm. Still finding all the phenotypes.
if you are in the US check out the canna genetics bank out of Oregon...

Your plant looks great..i've grown others breeds and got a seed here and there..so if I can grow this out with success...I will form a program around...the way I look at it..I get to claim it.
It didn't come from the clone only gg4, but in seed form from a gg4/and who knows...if I like it I will find a good landrace sativa depending on the flowering time and blend them up...

Thanks. I think it's a crapshoot to be honest. I was ready to chop it once I saw the nanners but really didn't have anything else flowering at the time so I took a chance. I'm assuming that sterile male flowers are a thing.

I think you have a chance of hermi genes with a lot of breeders seeds also. Here's a pic of an Alien Tarantula that I definitely chopped. I popped 5 seeds got 3 females. Well so I thought.

How far into flower were you when you caught the male in the garden?

I've been buying seeds since 2004 and have barely run into problems.
Yeah i just have really, really bad luck. :spew:

Also nice grows hempire and qube. Looking good!

I invested time into mystery because I habe the space and the time inbetween to do it. Only thing I really wasted was a little space and a pot. But the rewards noe will be much better. It is all female at the minute and no problems. Even crap seeds are good if they are free. There is a lot you can do with seeds, even if they hermie.

Eh I have had a of fun over the years with a simple bag of seeds. I have found some winners and losers I've got to admit. All of them were interesting one way or another.
Here is a couple new finds.

Top one is a female, very strong indica, the lower one is a male I moved it outside already indica too. On.the fence bout letting them :hump:.

Mine just itched to 12/12 and is starting to stretch. Everything going great and still on female calyx and pistils. No buldges or balls. A couple mini leaves popped out and still only throwing hairs. So far, so good. And this thing still taller and thicker than any other plant I got. Mystery Cross of 2 strong parents from a random seed in a bag of a bunch of bud. Not brick.

Not to mention that the leaves are gigantic. If this thing makes it to the end, I am definitely going to acess the situation and maybe grow another rounnd, or cross with another strong parent.

Just a quick little update. Mine are going fine 6 days into flower, even after having to revert back to veg (4 days) after 7 days of flower. They started to grow buds instantly. Fat colas in the works. No balls. No nanners. A mere 2 weeks after last pictures and grown under 2x 200 watt CFLs. You know, the ones everyone loves to hate so much... Yeah, those... Anyways, growing 2 plant under each light. Still no issue and growing big ol' titties. 20200414_110153.jpg20200414_110344.jpg20200414_110324.jpg

Not bad consider the idea of moving over to led bulbs without the tops on them.

Hermie plants produce female seeds. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ran beans that came from hermie plants and all were females every time with no hermie tendencies. Last spring I gave a friend 12 hermie beans I found in a half zip bag I got off a family member to try. He planted them outdoors and he harvested over 10 pounds 100% seed free..

I like this plant.. I flipped this tree on 2/14, it was mature so i started my count as well as taking several clones all of which I’ll be flowering at different times to see what’s best while keeping a mom..

Funny thing is since I’ve started on this tree it’s been about 5 months ago.. I’ve gotta find me something to go with her..EAEAB3D8-7EDD-41AC-AA46-83264855AA1D.jpeg03766918-F2F9-4CB7-B99A-4FA3ED93A556.jpegD070743E-3224-4386-84B4-EA4A3FC5BAB1.jpeg
