Hi RIU! Im super excited to share my first closet grow with you! -Trippy
seeds: I am growing 2 Auto Flowering Northern Lights from Visions seeds along with (free bonus from herbies) 2 Feminized Sage N Sour from TH seeds.
LIGHT: Im using 2 2ft 4tube T5HO. Each tube produces 2500 lumens (or they say it does >.>) for a total of 20,000 lumens. Im growing da babies in 3 gal nursery pots with transparent saucers to contain runoff. I got these lights from craigslist for $50. I have them hung on a chain that connects to the light fixture by a S hook. I can easily change the height by placing the s hook into different parts of the chain. I had ordered this Adjustable Grow Light Rope but it required you to apply a great amount of force when youre engaging the lever, so I was terrified that my hook in the ceiling would give out.
WALLS: At first i thought about using aluminum foil cuz yeah its shiny woohoo but after researching it, it causes hotspots and isnt that great on reflectivity. I then read about mylar and that its the best lining for your walls. At homedepot its 25ft Mylar by ViaGrow for $30. i was being cheap again and didnt wanna do that. so i read up some more and ran across this thing called "emergency blankets". its like reflective lightweight material that runs $3 a packet at walmart in the camping section. but on Amazon i bought a 10 Pack of Emergency Blankets for $7!

I live in an apartment so I didnt want to make a hole in the ceiling or wall for exhaust and intake. (just didnt feel right LOL) At first I thought about making a hole in the door and replacing it with a new one when I move out. This way, I could take it with me and I could reuse it wherever I move to. So I went to Home Depot and found out itd be $114 or some nonsense, NO. I didnt wanna go that route anymore.
DOOR: I then ran across a thread where someone used a material called Roc-Lon® Flame Ban Flame Resistant White. Its like a super reflective drape. I went and checked it out and chose the flame resistant one that was 2 dollars more. (idk that 2 dollars gave me an extra comfort I guess. LOL) I used Velcro to secure my door to the inner door frame of the closet. Spent about $8.
***NOTE: After trying out the Blackout Fabric, I dont really like it much paired with Velcro. It keeps coming undone. I ordered Polymer and used a staple gun to staple it to the inner portion of the door frame. I also bought Tarp Zippers that I attached to both ends of the poly door which enables me to open the door. I highly recommend this method over the blackout fabric or making a hole in your door.
I had a few things laying around at my parents house that I used for this set up for exhaust which, with the low heat of the T5s and low bedroom temps, it works amazing! Keeps my days temps at a high of 79 and my night temps with a low of 66 (tested for about 2.5 days with lights on).
VENTILATION: I use a 6 inch duct booster (its loud) that I had to rewire to be able to connect to an outlet thats pushes air through 6 inch ducting. I have this paired with Louvered Vents I bought at Home Depot for $2 that serves as a passive intake. I cut a small hole in the top left corner of my door and put the exhaust duct through and duct taped it to prevent light leaks. I then cut holes in the bottom of my door and placed the louvered vents in. I have two 4 inch vents serving as a passive intake. I constantly have a Honeywell Fan blowing toward the intake, that I found at target on clearance for $5.
For a lot of growers a duct booster is not proper exhaust but it certain cases it does serve a good purpose.
I germinated the seeds by dropping four seeds (2 NL and 2 SNS) into four separate shot glasses filled with distilled water. I stored them in my kitchen cabinet for 24 hours. By this time, they had all sunk to the bottoms of the glasses and I planted them into the soil with the taproot (white hair coming out from seed) facing down.
MEDIUM: For my medium, I used a mixture of Fox Farms Ocean Forest, Fox Farms Light Warrior and Perlite. I got the FFOF for $11 and LW for $12 from my local grow store. (I watered my pots a bit when I placed the seeds to germinated to moisten the soil in prep for planting.)
On Day 2 the first GREEN appeared! The biggest seed out of the four sprouted first, maybe its a coincidence, maybe not.

* I had to remove the shell on this baby. the leaf that injured has not recovered yet. plant health does not seemed to be affected by this.
