T-5 Lighting Height and a Pest

Hey everyone,
I have 3 green crack (one was a male and took a little bit of my soul with it when I had to cut it down :( ). 4 are from bag seed and have been monster cropped from previous grow. I’ve been running an 8bulb 4 foot T-5 light 54w h/o 6500k. I just switched to 12/12 already took clones to start perpetual harvesting. Ph in and out are 6.0-6.5. So my questions are

1: At what height should I be placing the light away from the plants? Will keeping it a bit higher up force the scroged side shoots to come up better during the stretch? Or should I defoliate more?

2: what kind of bug is this? I’ve looked at the most common pest for cannabis but can find one that looked like this. Their little yellow bugs (almost look like worms. I had them during a previous grow too and they don’t seem to be hurting the plants but still would like to know.

I’m running a two foot panel and I keep it between 2-4 from the tops of my plants, however I’m also a stay at home Dad so I can go check on my plants and adjust my lights constantly. Really have to watch them in flowering, it’s amazing how quickly they can grow into your light.

The bugs look like thrips. Monterey garden insect spray work great to get rid of them.

Surprisingly this T-5 puts out some pretty decent heat. Yea I have no idea where the bugs came from (once and awhile looks like they suck the chlorophyll out of the fan leafs) but could they come from happy frog/ ocean forest blend soil? Right now I have the light about 6-8 inches above it.

IMG_20181030_214723.jpgI keep mine about an inch...but I check them multiple times a day and have a fan blowing across the tops to keep the heat away from them. I do that to keep them from stretching so much and for better light penetration. T5 light doesnt penetrate as far as more high powered lights. Having the light 4" away means you are only penetrating about 8"....or so I am told.
PS: The plant is TriFi which is naturally lanky. Am doing my best not to encourage them. ;)

Can you swap bulbs for a cooler temperature? Like 3500K? It will help flower.
