All charts taken from Steven Levitt in Journal of Economic perspectives vol 18 #1 163-190 (2004).This info I first encountered in Levitts book Freakonomics. In the early 1990s the Murder rate started dropping across the US ,opposed to all projections.Actually all violent and serious crime was dropping at an amazing rate. Explanations for the drop were offered such as increased police strategy, economy and changing population demographics.Screenshot_20230324_150747_Drive.jpgScreenshot_20230324_152203_Drive.jpg

Statistically 4 factors played the biggest part in the decline.Increased numbers of officers, more prisons for deterrent, the receding Crack epidemic and the Legalization of Abortion.Seems that the coming of age of a generation of unwanted children was a huge contributer to violent crime.Statistics here show a 25 percent lower rate due to legalized and accessibility to abortion in the early 70s.Screenshot_20230324_152421_Drive.jpg

The 5 states that allowed earlier access to abortion in fact experienced the crime drop earlier .Turns out unwanted children grow up to be major contributors of violent crime and murder.Should we be preparing to build more prisons?Screenshot_20230324_151150_Drive~2.jpgScreenshot_20230324_150519_Drive.jpgScreenshot_20230324_150544_Drive~2.jpg
