Supplementing HPS with LED

Looking to add some LED to my current 600w HPS set up.

I have been advised to use cool white LED flood lights (which I have) however after doing a little digging around i found this reasonably priced unit. I have no experience with LEDs and growing so if i could get some opinions if this is worth the investment or if I should stick with what I have?

This is basically the flood lights I have-

This is the unit i am considering-

It would be cheaper to go with T5 inserts or something, about the same or greater efficiency as the those particular LED fixtures....even the bulbs...

These would be badazz for Side lighting......little luxeon strips...147 lumens/w in 4000k @600ma....13watts each I think...these would actually put out some photons as compared to the two options you were looking at......
http://rollitup.org/t/micro-greenhouse-with-luxeon-xf-3535l-led-strips.875345/#post-11724137

You could probably put together 4x 300mm bars for 20+ extra PAR watts [Fyi...the bulb will give you 2-3 PAR watts and the 165w fixture maybe 30 Par watts]...mount them on cheap Ebay 300x 25mm heatsinks and you could build sets of 4 for $50 or so......

This kind of side lighting is exactly what I am looking for!
Sorry in advanced if these seem like dumb basic questions but i have 0 experience with this!

So basically order the Led strip from mouser or somewhere? you're saying 4 different 300mm bars?
http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=LUXEON+XF-3535L

They attach onto the heat sinks which are mounted directly on the wall? Any kind of generic heat sinks work as long as they are 300x25mm? is this a standard measurement for heatsinks? (haven't been able to find this measurement)

Are the LED strips and heat sinks all i would need?
Or does the Led strip itself come with a plug of some sort? or is there an adapter or something else to make this work?

Thanks again, this sounds perfect and like an interesting project!

Yes, you can also post in robincnn's thread and see if they found them anyplace else, other than Mouser, but the link ^ is good.

These are just the sinks, that cnn recommended [uses?] and they are cheap.....

Also need a driver, which @salmonetin recommended in cnn's thread...the Phillips drivers can also be found really cheap on Ebay and that would be my 1st suggestion to look.....

The driver probably needs a plug or comes with one...then attach the driver to the each 300mm strip in parallel....

300mm = 14" ish.........4x might be overkill, maybe only 2?

Find some small chain and picture framing hangers to attach to the heatsinks....or source som Angle aluminum bracket from a home improvement chain and make a small frame for the heatinks and attach to the outside of your HPS reflector???

Great info! Thank you so much.
Im going to get on this project asap!
Will post pictures when done!

The color question was more your opinion on which would best supplement the HPS!
@Abiqua

Welp....are there 5000k available? Thats probably my 1st choice...4k would also work, but would the extra red above the 5k be redundant for the 2100k HPS?

Its all really a crapshoot beyond photons at this point...but I think white light leaning towards the blue spectrum is a good supplementation for HPS :peace:

4000k seems to be the highest available unless you want 600+ strips lol
Probably will end up with the cool white at 4000k!

5000K @ 157 lm/watt is available on USA mouser but in 1150 mm length. These are good but hard to find to find a heatsink that long. these 1050mm are i think 33 watt each
4000K is the max i have seen for the 300mm strips.
I would not worry about 600m strips as it is same as 300mm just led are spaced apart. 525mm strip is 21v and drivers for 21v not common.
They are available at mouser.com and digikey.com. You can lookup on chipfinder if you the exact Manufacturer Part No: L235-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I think any heatsink with some fins or decent width will do just fine since 300mm strips are 11 watt each only.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Power-...597?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae3a2033d
This heatsink reached around 50 degree Celsius. A little hot to touch but then 50 is fine for passive i guess.

I thought about this heatsink since it has a reflector but at $9 each is a little high. I still might try one to see if the sides can focus beam better.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3x-Long-Aluminium-Heatsink-Cooling-for-4-x-3W-LED-Reflective-/331542331614

Not sure if you in USA. I Bought 1.813" Wide Extruded Aluminum Heatsink from heatsink USA and its good for upto 2 or 3 strips in parallel.
It is $0.66 /inch, custom length and would be a good choice if you choose 1050mm strips.

I like this option too
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt...inum-Angle-with-1-8-in-Thick-801747/204273988

For up to 2 x 300mm strips = 22 watts i recommend $12
Meanwell GS25U18-P1J , at http://www.onlinecomponents.com/mean-well-gs25u18p1j.html?p=11952126
I currently use this to power my strip.
Search ebay for 'DC12V Power Plug Adapter Connector'. This will work with your meanwell 18v power supply of most other 18v power supplies. they also also available in Y configuration (1 female to many male)

For more than 2 strips, connect 2 strips in series, that way you need 36volt power supplies. Plenty of meanwell options for 36Volts. These 36 volt supplies good for 1150mm strip too.

I was not able to find the Phillips driver that salmonetin recommended.

They easily stick to heatsink. Good to clean heatsink before installation. I soldered my connectors. remember to secure the wire so that if the wire pulls it does not break off the connector. So far i did not have any luck with the IDC connector, @Abiqua was trying the IDC connector too. Another good thing is the LED are spread across length so even light, not hot and it can get close to plants and not harm them. 300mm strip can be cut in 100mm pieces. 1150mm strip can be cut into 395+295+360 pieces.

@Abiqua i don't know much about HPS
600 watt hps. Assuming 4x4. one 1150 strip on each side. 33w*4= 130 watts of around 150 lm/watt. = 20,000 LED lumens along with 600w HPS sounds like an overkill ?
May be this is more reasonable for side lighting.
300mm on each side 11*4 = 6000 lumens
2x 300mm on each side 11*8 = 12000 lumens

Good luck
PS: back to roadtrip wont back for another week.

Just got incredibly lucky! A friend that has a much much larger set up is throwing me a 400w equivalent over head led panel and 20 ft of LED strips.
I have yet to see the strips but it sounds like a pre built version of this idea!
Maybe over kill but more light the better right...

Hoping to get it all set up over the weekend, I will post pics!

...note... i like the driver...but the recomendation comes from her pdfs...

...maybe other posibilities...

redbirdled.com has some interesting strip lights also.
Over 140 lm/w. 4 ft. strips at 44 watts each, for around $80.
Also a US company.

...or maybe... ....do you remember the old snake models i talk in my thread...

While I may be too inexperienced for this forum, I too am trying to supplement but at this point building LEDs from scratch isn't in the cards. I've about 20 sq ft lit by 2 x 400 hps. Currently I'm supplementing these with 6x Lvjing 58w led spots and their 120 watt square. While the square seems weak, the spots are pretty bright and the plants respond.
Of course, heat is an issue, so how much can I turn down the hps without killling the tight buds? One 400 instead of two? Both down to 200? It's almost the reverse question how much HPS to supplement the LEDs.
Thanks
Currently running JackH and CriticalKush

Just put these side lights together!

Using Led strips from Nora lighting. 3000k warm white to get more reds! Installing tomorrow

Ive got some Red/Green/Blue strips on they way! Side lighting is over the top haha but its so cheap to run it, why not!

My overhead LED is 4000k so it should add some blue as well!

@Zzyphr Im not professional but from my research unless you add a good amount more LED turning down the HPS may hurt your yield.. I think at that point you would have to get a pretty decent size LED grow light to make up for the HPS?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong!
