Hey coolj, not trying to steer you away from the Cree 3070 COB's, they're awesome. Just keep in mind that although they're rated at 100w full power, 1400ma is probably the highest you'll want to drive them, that gives you ~50W per COB. Some great resources/help and info in this forum on DIY builds. I have some to build that I've been putting off for a while due to time constraints. I also run the LEC 315w Sun System(s) and have a thread going in my sig, just threw a second one in, 2 of them running in a 4x9.5x7' room with no heat issues. Both are great, but the COB's would probably outperform the LEC's watt for watt.

Yeah, 4x 3070's at least, 200w total for four of them, that might be stretching them to fully cover off a 3x3. If I were trying to cover a 3x3 I'd go 6x 3070's, total 300w and spread them evenly to cover off the 3x3'. That would grow some very nice bud. They get expensive, as expensive or more than higher end commercial panels, but they're the best you can get for indoor lighting right now imo. If you're on a budget, check out my thread to see what the LEC Sun Systems can do, that's $450-$490 to cover a 3x3 really well, heat is almost identical to LED's (I ran LED's in the same room before, and there's essentially no difference in temps). You can always start with 1x LEC and build the COB's over time to spread out the cost. The LEC/CMH + DIY COB's combo would be a nice mix and produce well. If you stick to these two options you won't be disappointed with the results, either will pay back your investment fast, first grow in a 3x3 would cover your cost + some.

what about the 3590s? also im just going to run one or two plants in supersoil... im thinking i could start with two diy cobs and go from there im also thinking on using passive heat sinks an putting a ibolt in the heat sink to use as a hanging point.

Haven't seen any real-world grows with the 3590's, although there's probably some folks starting to build with them. In theory they should be better, but while they could be more efficient they're not going to cover off enough area to reduce the number of COB's significantly if at all. If you're not in a hurry that's a good approach though, build 2 of the 3070's or 3590's and keep the footprint small until you build more and go from there. 2 would do a good sized plant or two smaller plants and give you a feel for growing with them. You can then decide how far you want to stretch their coverage.

just got a 4x4 and was gonna go w 2 315's or one 630. just wondering how the heat was? did u have it ducted?
2x 315's would be great coverage but maybe a little much in that space. Each 315 covers a 3x3 really well, you could probably stretch it but loose some edge coverage. Depending on how you'll run it you could do 1x 315w and 1x210w. The Elite Agro bulbs only come in those 2 sizes. The heat won't be a concern (with the Elite Agro's) if you have some head room, how high is the room/tent? I'm running 2x 315's in a 4x9.5x7' room and they put out the same heat as when I was running 700w of LED's in there.

No, you'd be fine, they generate slightly more heat than LED's, as long as you have normal environmental controls (circ. fans, exhaust etc.) you're fine. What you do need is some head room, whether tent or room to allow for hanging them, 20-22" to the canopy, plus the pots and plants. You'd need about 6' minimum height to grow 3ft. plants. The more height you have allows you to dissipate any heat better/easier as well.

So say I was running 8 of the lec315, should I be using a typical hid lighting controller like a helios 8? Considering how low the amp draw is for them I was wonderingif a controller is needed

Good point, have never run more than 2 at a time, and my setup is the more inefficient 120v/converter so probably draws quite a bit at start-up. I haven't seen any issue with both firing up at identical times but that's a long ways off running 8 of them.

What I can tell you is that in my setup, I have a dedicated 15A/120v circuit which powers up both at exactly the same time. That's because instead of individual timers for each light, I wired my outlets to be turned on/off by a direct-wired timer that turns any outlets connected (4 dedicated light sockets throughout the room) to that timer on/off when the timer kicks on/off. But even at that I'm not even pulling 50% load on that circuit at start-up. I'd imagine to fire up 8 you'd either need a controller or multiple circuits that could handle the load with some overhead, even at 220/240v.

What' your electrical (circuits/voltage/amperage) setup?

Cree is not the only one making cobs cooj. I am running 500w of bridglux vero-18. Seems to work pretty good. that same 500w gets a space upgrade soon from the 2x4 you see to a 4x4.




DIY LED is a great way to go no matter what you decide. CMH is great too. It has a lower start-up cost for sure. LED is here to stay though.

Assuming you're talking 240v as the specs are 1.42A for the 240v and 3A for the 120v Suns Systems. Yeah, going with the 2 separate circuits then you should be fine, drawing ~5.68A for 4 units, a little high with little head room but you should be good at about 57% load. Worst case scenario if you do see problems later you can always add a controller.

^^^^ What SG said, he's a bit of a pioneer with these lower cost but obviously very efficient vero's, in the right hands of course ;) Nice looking grow SG...

in general 240v lights will put out more than if being ran at 120v and be more efficient. IMO it is negligible. That being said.. If you can wire up to supply 240 that is what I would do every time.
