SUBERIN - The main substance in cork. Made in the roots, it's a carbon sink and sequesters carbon dioxide for decades. Joanne Chory, biologist at Salk Institute will head the initiative that aims to increase the amount of CO2 that plants store in their roots. Roots!...No roots...no fruits! Grow that root-ball big. Suberin will be bred and/or genetically engineered into seeds, with the capacity to store up to a hundred times more carbon than an equivalent area of dry land.
