Starting seeds in hydroton?

Hi, I'm building a DWC system gonna run CFLs. I'm just a bit confused on how to start the seed. I know how to germinate, I have germinated other types of seeds before. But how do I grow through infancy using hydroton medium? Do I just poke a hole in a large chunk of it and slap the seed in or do I need to grow roots in some other type of medium first? If that is the case how do I go about transplanting? Any advice is appreciated, I am building this soon so I am excited.

Start them in soilless starter plugs in a float tray. Then when ready to put in the DWC you just put the plug in the hydroton. Simple

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about

MOst growers would use a rockwool cube or a Jiffy starter cube. You could use a kitchen sponge, cut it in a cube, slice it in half, and stick the seed in it, but I really suggest a rockwool cube.

Um, okay, so after it's started in a starter rockwool cube then do I just put the starter cube in with the hydroton or what? I've already ordered 28 pounds of hydroton so there's no going back, that is what I'm gonna be using

yeah, once the seeds have rooted in the rockwool cubes you take those cubes and put them in your sys with the hydroton around and covering all but a tiny space for your seedling......
