Starting Fresh

Hello fellow RIU members! I'm going to be putting in a new garden this year with a pretty good assortment of your basic vegetables.

I just started germinating some of the seeds today for some of the vegges that need to get started early.

The garden should be around 26x40ft and have roughly 20 different kind of vegetables and fruit.

I plan on collecting seeds from some of the vegges taken from the garden along with jarring and canning so I should be able to post info on that as I go.

Here's a pick of the trays of seeds being started and of where the garden will be once the snow is gone. I have yet to break ground so I have a lot of work ahead.

Here's a list of the fruits and vegetables I plan on having in no particular order:

Peas
Bush Bean
Corn
Spinach
Radish
Lettuce
Cabbage
Carrots
Tomatoes, Rutgers
Squash, Winter and Summer
Onion
Cucumbers
Swiss Chard
Sweet Pepper
Beets
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Cauliflower

I may be putting in a small herb section also.

im subbed man. looks like your off to a good start. once that snow is gone the work shall begin, i like the work that is involved with growing plants though, it is very enjoyable for me.

I assume this will be an organic garden using your own compost?

Correct, I plan on using my loader tractor to scrap off the first 3-6 inches of top soil then replace it with compost then till it in.

After that I have to put up a perimeter fence around 3 sides to keep my animals out and get the rows ready.

i just got this property 7 months ago...7 acres of weeds and junk, front 4 acres... house, pond, and "yard", back 3 acres, goat pasture. point is, im doing about the same size plot so this ought to be nice. im not into a large variety of veggies, but will grow corn, tomatos,potatos,onions,watermelon, and cantalope. but im sure ill add a few other goodies as we progress. by the way, my garden is located about 50 ft. from the pond and 100 ft from house water source. gonna take advantage of my newly acquired property...im in!

I'm new to gardening but have being doing a large amount of research and studying so I'll be as informative as I can and post a lot of pics.

cool, my gardening exp. consists of about 11 yrs of growing and picking for uncle bo-bo on a couple of diff. penal instutitions. polite way of saying prison,lol. but ill help where i can. gonna go eat, food makes me hungry, later...

I'll be picking up another seed starter today along with some more peppers I want to grow.

Here's the fruits/vegges that I need to get started early:

Watermelon
Cantaloupe
Honeydew melon
Tomatoes
Cabbage
Broccoli
Peppers; yellow, green, jalapeno
Cauliflower

Last frost for my location is around the 17-23rd of May.

I decided to do the hydro garden again this year. I bought one of those portable carports, & I'm building an aeroponic set up similar to stinkbudz. I'm using round pipe. I figured hydro would be easier with my bad back and my property doesn't have good drainage. So the DIY Aero Unit I bought 10 tubes to start with. Did I mention that I thought hydro would be easier on my back? Once the system is built, lmao. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I had this great idea, lol. just doing the veggies we use the most; corn, broccolli, cucumbers, okra, peas and green beans. If I could figure out how to do potatoes and carrots I would add them to the list too. I suppose I could ask in the hydro thread, lol. I have got to get my system together quick, in my dreams I figured it would be a snap and I have 5 trays of seeds sprouting. ! got a 1/2 hp pump so I figure I should be able to do somewhere around 40 tubes, maybe...

wow your last frost date is almost the same as ours. our average end date for frost is 15th of may

Sounds cool, I personally don't know much about hydro but it sounds like it can be pretty tricky.

Good call with keeping it easy with back trouble, wouldn't want to strain yourself and make things worse.

awesome variety. sounds pretty much like what i would grow if i had the space. i would LOVE to grow brocolli but the plants take up too damn much space. i'm only working with a 5x15 ft space so most of my stuff has to go in pots or troughs. your frost date is similar to mine so you should have some real good luck with the cold weather stuff like the brocolli. lol just because our growing season is like a week long doesn't mean we can't have a mean garden. you have a good grasp on the timing which is the most important thing with a shorter season. subbed.

Sweet, thank for stopping in! My wife and I have been finding out all the information we can on how to set up a great garden. We've got most of our planning figured out so most of the work left is the manual labor. I've been learning on how different fruits and vegetables can be invasive to one another and what can accent each other also. When I get a bit more time I'll try and touch base with some of that stuff.

Vegetables not to grow together:
~Potatoes inhibit tomatoes and squash
~Beans inhibit growth of onions
~Broccoli inhibit growth of tomatoes
~Carrots inhibit growth of dill

Notes:
Plant carrots next to tomatoes for healthy soil.
Plant asparagus next to tomatoes because asparagus beetles don't like tomatoes.
Peas thrive next to green bean in rows next to each other or let them share the same trellis.
Carrots in addition to liking tomatoes also like to be next to peas and lettuce.

when god speaks, kitty subs. eagerly watching what your compost does to your veggies.
we're in the may-longweekend-planting-zone as well (the snow's gone now tho.)
i've started some seeds but am SO procrastinating on the actual beds... *sigh*

Glad to have you! I'm just waiting on this snow to melt away and the ground to thaw a bit then the work begins.

I've been wanting to put in this garden for 2 years so I'm pretty pumped about it. :mrgreen:

My wife picked up some annual flowers we'll be bordering the garden with for looks and to help attract bees.

There will be:

Cosmos
Aster
Calendula
Cut flower mixture pack
Alyssum
Evening primrose
Zinnia

i wanted flowers to i heard their is certain types of flowers that if you plant near your veggies the deter any pests away some how. i dont know what kind they are though.
i was also thinking of getting one of these roll out pads they come pre seeded and all you have to do is roll it out and water. plus it is only 5 bucks :leaf:

You should, it would really brighten it up. I love how colorful flowers can be in full bloom on a summer day. I'm putting them all around my place this year.

That's a really good deal also for how convenient it is and you could cut it and use it in a couple spots. :smile:
